Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. It can cause loud snoring, gasping, morning headaches and daytime fatigue, and it has been linked to other health concerns. Diagnosis requires a sleep assessment arranged through a physician, not a dental exam alone.
For some Glen Meyer patients who have been diagnosed, an oral appliance may be one treatment option. At our Port Dover office, the dentist can discuss whether an appliance might suit you, how it works alongside your physician’s care and what follow-up is involved over time.

Recognizing signs
Loud snoring, pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep and restless nights are common signs. A bed partner may notice these more than you do. Waking frequently to urinate or with a dry mouth can also occur. If someone has noticed breathing pauses, mention it to your physician, as these warrant a medical assessment.
Excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, morning headaches, irritability and dozing off during quiet activities or while driving can all be linked to poor sleep quality. These symptoms can have many causes, so a proper medical evaluation is important. Do not drive or operate farm equipment if you feel dangerously sleepy, and raise your concerns with your doctor promptly.
Getting diagnosed
Your physician can arrange a sleep study or other testing to confirm whether you have sleep apnea and how severe it is. Treatment options may include positive airway pressure therapy, lifestyle changes, oral appliances or other approaches. Your doctor will help decide which options are appropriate based on the results, your symptoms and your overall health.
If an oral appliance is considered, the dentist examines your teeth, gums, jaw joints and bite to determine whether you are a suitable candidate. Healthy teeth and gums are needed to support the device night after night. The dentist works with your physician, sharing information so your sleep treatment is coordinated rather than handled in isolation.
Oral appliances
Many oral appliances for sleep apnea hold the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep, which can help keep the airway more open. They are custom-made from impressions or scans of your teeth and are adjusted gradually to find an effective, comfortable position. The dentist will explain the design, how adjustments are made and how progress is judged.
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth discomfort, excess saliva or dry mouth, especially in the first weeks. Over a longer period, appliances can cause changes in the bite. Regular dental visits allow these effects to be monitored and managed. Report persistent pain, jaw clicking or bite changes promptly, so the appliance or plan can be adjusted appropriately.
Follow-up care
After the appliance is fitted and adjusted, your physician may recommend follow-up testing to confirm that it is actually improving your breathing during sleep. Feeling better does not always mean the condition is fully controlled. Keep both medical and dental follow-up appointments, and report any return of snoring, gasping or daytime fatigue to both providers.
Clean the appliance daily as instructed and store it in its case when it is not in your mouth. Bring it to dental checkups, so it can be examined for wear or damage and its fit checked. The appliance may need adjustment or replacement over time. Let both your dentist and physician know about health changes that might affect treatment.
Planning your appointment
If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea or your physician has suggested an oral appliance, call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment. Share your sleep study results if available.
Bring information from your physician or sleep clinic, and mention any jaw pain, recent dental work or previous appliance use you have had.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician, usually after a sleep study. A dentist may notice signs, such as grinding or a large tongue, and suggest you speak with your doctor. If an appliance is recommended, the dentist can help with that part of treatment.
Effectiveness varies by person and severity. CPAP is often recommended for moderate to severe sleep apnea, while oral appliances may suit some people with mild to moderate cases or those who cannot tolerate CPAP. Your physician will advise.
Over time, some people notice changes in how their teeth fit together. Regular dental checkups allow the dentist to monitor your bite and jaw. Report any changes or discomfort, so the appliance or treatment plan can be adjusted.
Over-the-counter devices are not designed or monitored for sleep apnea treatment and may mask symptoms without treating the condition. Speak with your physician about diagnosis and appropriate treatment options before relying on any device at home.
The process involves an assessment, impressions and fitting, followed by gradual adjustments over several weeks. The dentist can give an estimated timeline after your consultation. Coordination with your physician and any follow-up testing may also affect timing.
A custom oral appliance may reduce snoring for some people. Glen Meyer patients can learn why sleep apnea should be ruled out first and how devices are fitted.
A custom night guard is shaped to your bite to cushion grinding while you sleep. Glen Meyer patients can learn how it is fitted, cleaned and checked over time.
