Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. It can cause loud snoring, daytime fatigue and other health concerns. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some people, a custom oral appliance can be an effective part of treatment.
If you live in Cultus and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or suspect you might have it, our Port Dover dentists can discuss oral appliance therapy. We work with your physician’s diagnosis and recommendations, and we explain what an appliance can and cannot do.

Diagnosis first
Loud snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, waking gasping or choking, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness and difficulty concentrating can be signs of sleep apnea. If you notice these symptoms, talk with your family doctor. The dentist may also raise concerns based on findings during an exam. Worn teeth or a scalloped tongue are sometimes clues.
A sleep study, either at home or in a sleep clinic, measures breathing, oxygen levels and other factors during sleep. Your physician uses the results to determine whether you have sleep apnea and how severe it is. This information is essential before considering any oral appliance. Ask your physician for a copy of the report to share with the dental team.
How appliances work
Mandibular advancement devices are custom appliances worn during sleep that hold the lower jaw slightly forward. This can help prevent the tongue and soft tissues from collapsing into the airway. The amount of advancement can usually be adjusted gradually to find an effective, comfortable position. This fine-tuning usually happens over several weeks of follow-up visits.
Oral appliances are often considered for mild to moderate sleep apnea or for people who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. They are not suitable for everyone. Your physician and dentist will consider the severity of your condition, your dental health and your preferences when discussing options. Some people use an appliance for travel and CPAP at home.
Fitting process
The dentist examines your teeth, gums and jaw joints to make sure an appliance is appropriate. Loose teeth, gum disease or jaw problems may need attention first. Impressions or scans are taken, and the appliance is made in a laboratory to fit your teeth precisely. A bite record captures a comfortable starting jaw position for you.
At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks comfort and fit and explains how to use and care for the appliance. Over the following weeks, the jaw position may be adjusted gradually. A follow-up sleep study may be recommended by your physician to check effectiveness. Feeling better is encouraging, but a test confirms the appliance is doing its job.
Ongoing care
Some people experience jaw soreness, tooth tenderness or changes in bite, especially at first. Many of these effects settle, but report them to the dentist. Over time, small bite changes can occur, so regular follow-up is important to monitor your teeth and jaw. A morning exercise or repositioning device may be suggested to help your bite settle after removing the appliance.
Clean the appliance daily as instructed and bring it to dental checkups. Continue to follow up with your physician about your sleep apnea. If symptoms return or the appliance becomes uncomfortable, contact the office. Adjustments or a new appliance may be needed over the years. Weight changes can affect how well it works for you.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss oral appliance therapy. If you have a sleep study report or physician referral, mention it when booking so the right appointment can be arranged.
Bring your sleep study results, a list of medications and details of any CPAP use. The dentist will coordinate with your physician as needed.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. Dentists may notice signs and recommend you speak with your doctor, who can arrange the testing needed to confirm or rule out the condition properly.
CPAP is often more effective for severe sleep apnea, but oral appliances can work well for some people with mild to moderate cases. Your physician will guide this decision based on your results and preferences.
Some people notice bite changes over time. Regular dental follow-up helps monitor and manage these effects. Report any changes you notice, such as teeth that no longer meet the way they used to in the morning.
Many people adjust within a few weeks. Initial jaw or tooth soreness is common and often settles. The dentist can make adjustments to improve comfort without losing effectiveness. Keep wearing it unless you are advised otherwise.
Snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, so it is important to be assessed by a physician first. Treating snoring without diagnosis may mask a serious condition that needs proper medical care and follow-up.
A custom oral appliance may reduce snoring for some people. Cultus patients can learn why medical screening comes first, how appliances work and what to expect.
A custom night guard is made from your own teeth’s impressions. Cultus patients can learn about fit, comfort, cleaning and when a guard should be replaced.
