Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, interrupting breathing. It can cause loud snoring, gasping, morning headaches and daytime tiredness, and it is linked to other health concerns. Diagnosis requires a sleep study arranged through a physician. For some people, a custom oral appliance made by a dentist can be part of treatment.
If you live in Boston and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, or your physician has suggested an oral appliance, our Port Dover office can discuss whether one may be suitable. If you suspect sleep apnea but have not been assessed, speak with your family doctor first.

Diagnosis first
Loud, frequent snoring, pauses in breathing noticed by a partner, waking up gasping, morning headaches, dry mouth on waking, poor concentration and feeling tired despite a full night in bed can all suggest sleep apnea. The dentist may also notice signs during an exam, such as tooth wear from grinding or a large tongue, and mention them to you.
Sleep apnea is diagnosed through a sleep study, which a physician arranges and interprets. The results show how severe it is and help determine the most appropriate treatment. A dentist cannot diagnose sleep apnea, but can work with your physician if an oral appliance is recommended. Ask your doctor for a copy of the sleep study results to bring along.
Oral appliances
Mandibular advancement devices are custom-made appliances that fit over the teeth and gently hold the lower jaw forward during sleep. This can help keep the airway open and reduce snoring and breathing interruptions for some people. The appliance is adjustable so the position can be fine-tuned over time. It is removed in the morning and cleaned before storing.
Oral appliances are often considered for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for people who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. They are not suitable for everyone. Your physician and dentist will consider the severity of your condition, your teeth and jaw health and your preferences. The decision is usually made together, with your physician leading on the medical side.
Getting fitted
The dentist will examine your teeth, gums and jaw joints to confirm they can support an appliance. Dental problems may need treatment first. Impressions or scans of your teeth are taken, along with bite records that guide the starting position of the jaw. The dentist will explain the type of appliance recommended and why it suits you.
When the appliance is ready, it is fitted and you are shown how to wear and care for it. The jaw position may be adjusted gradually over several visits to find a balance between effectiveness and comfort. A follow-up sleep study through your physician may be recommended to check how well it is working at the chosen setting.
Long-term use
Some people notice jaw soreness, tooth tenderness, excess saliva or dry mouth when they first start wearing an appliance. These often settle. Over time, appliances can cause small changes in the bite, which the dentist will monitor. Report persistent discomfort or bite changes so adjustments can be considered. Simple morning jaw exercises are sometimes suggested to help.
Clean the appliance daily and store it in its case. Bring it to dental checkups so the fit and condition can be checked. Keep in touch with your physician about your sleep apnea, since symptoms, weight changes or other health factors may affect how well treatment works. Mention any return of snoring or tiredness at your next visit.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if your physician has recommended an oral appliance for sleep apnea. Let the team know whether you have had a sleep study and whether results can be shared.
If you have not been diagnosed, speak with your family doctor about a sleep assessment before arranging a dental appliance consultation.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician through a sleep study. A dentist may notice signs and suggest you speak with your doctor, and can provide an oral appliance if it is recommended as part of treatment.
CPAP is often the first-line treatment, particularly for more severe sleep apnea. Oral appliances can be effective for some people with mild to moderate apnea or those who cannot use CPAP. Your physician will help guide this decision.
Long-term use can cause small changes in how teeth meet. The dentist will monitor your bite at follow-up visits and discuss ways to manage any changes that occur, such as adjusting the setting or adding morning exercises.
Many people adjust within a few weeks. Some jaw or tooth soreness is common at first. Contact the office if discomfort persists so the appliance can be checked and adjusted rather than abandoned in a drawer.
Yes. Sleep apnea is a medical condition. Your physician should continue to monitor your treatment, and a follow-up sleep study may be recommended to confirm that the appliance is working as intended for your breathing.
Loud snoring can disrupt a whole household. Boston patients can learn if a custom oral appliance might help and why ruling out sleep apnea comes first.
A custom night guard is shaped to your bite to shield teeth from grinding. Boston patients can be measured and fitted at our Port Dover office.
