Silver Hill patients are cared for at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Silver HillRelief starts with finding the cause
Severe tooth pain can be sharp, throbbing or constant, and it may spread to the ear, jaw or head. Common causes include deep decay reaching the nerve, a cracked tooth, an abscess, gum infection or an impacted wisdom tooth. Pain relievers can take the edge off, but they do not fix the underlying problem, which usually needs dental treatment.
If you are in Silver Hill with a toothache that is keeping you awake or getting worse, call our Port Dover office and describe the pain. The team can discuss how soon you should be seen and offer guidance on managing discomfort safely until your appointment.

Understanding the pain
Sharp pain triggered by cold that fades quickly may point to sensitivity or a small cavity. Lingering pain after hot or cold, or a deep throbbing ache, may suggest the nerve is inflamed. Pain on biting can indicate a crack or infection at the root. Pain in the back of the mouth with swelling may come from a wisdom tooth.
Pain that wakes you at night, worsens over hours or days, is accompanied by swelling, fever or a bad taste, or does not respond to over-the-counter pain relief should be assessed promptly. Swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck, or difficulty swallowing or breathing, needs emergency medical care immediately.
Managing until seen
Rinse with warm salt water, floss gently to remove any trapped food and keep your head elevated when resting. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you, taken according to the label or a pharmacist’s advice. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can ease throbbing and reduce swelling.
Avoid placing aspirin or other tablets directly against the gum, as they can burn the tissue. Do not apply heat to the face. Avoid very hot, cold or sugary foods and chew on the other side. Do not take leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription medication, since they may not be appropriate.
Finding the cause
The dentist asks about your symptoms, examines the area and usually takes X-rays. Tests such as tapping, applying cold or having you bite on an instrument help identify the problem tooth. Sometimes pain is felt in a different tooth from the one causing it, so careful testing is important to get the right answer.
Once the cause is clear, the dentist explains the findings and the treatment options. They will tell you whether the tooth can be saved, what the treatment involves and how urgent it is. You can ask questions about each option, including what might happen if treatment is delayed.
Treatment and relief
Depending on the cause, treatment might include a filling, root canal therapy to remove an inflamed or infected nerve, draining an abscess, treating a gum infection or extracting a tooth that cannot be saved. Sometimes initial treatment is done to relieve pain, with the rest completed at a later appointment.
Some soreness may continue for a few days after treatment as the area heals. Follow aftercare instructions and take pain relief as advised. Contact the office if pain increases, swelling develops or you have a fever. Keep follow-up appointments to complete treatment and protect the tooth from further problems.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as soon as a toothache becomes severe or keeps you awake. Describe the pain, any swelling and what you have tried, so the team can advise on next steps.
Bring a list of medications and note what pain relief you have taken and when. Have someone drive you if you are in significant pain.

Lying down can increase blood flow to the head, which may make an inflamed tooth throb more. Fewer distractions at night can also make pain more noticeable. Keeping your head elevated may help, but persistent night pain should be assessed by a dentist.
Pain sometimes fades, but the underlying cause often remains. For example, a dying nerve may stop hurting while infection continues to develop. Having the tooth checked is important even if the pain eases, so the cause can be properly treated.
Over-the-counter pain relievers may help if they are safe for you. Follow the label or ask a pharmacist, especially if you take other medications or have health conditions. Pain relief manages symptoms but does not replace dental treatment for the cause.
It depends on the cause. If the nerve is irreversibly inflamed or infected, root canal treatment may be recommended to save the tooth. Other causes, like a small cavity or gum problem, may need different treatment. The dentist will explain after examining you.
Go to the hospital if you have facial swelling spreading quickly, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a high fever or feel very unwell. For toothache without these symptoms, call the dental office for guidance and an appointment.
A root canal removes infected pulp so the tooth can be kept. Silver Hill patients can learn the warning signs, the visit and how to protect the tooth.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: pain, swelling, a break or a lost filling. Silver Hill patients can learn what it covers and what to tell us.
