A severe toothache can make it hard to eat, sleep or concentrate. Common causes include deep decay reaching the nerve, a cracked tooth, an abscess, gum infection and an erupting wisdom tooth. Pain may be constant or come in waves, and it may worsen with heat, cold, chewing or lying down. Over-the-counter relief may help temporarily, but the cause usually needs treatment.
If you are in Normandale with a toothache that is severe, persistent or getting worse, call our Port Dover office. The team will ask about your symptoms, discuss how soon you should be seen and offer advice for managing pain in the meantime.

Describe the pain
Sharp pain on biting may suggest a crack. Lingering pain after hot or cold often points to an inflamed nerve. Throbbing pain that keeps you awake can indicate infection. Pain that spreads to the ear, jaw or head may make it hard to pinpoint the tooth. Note what triggers and eases the pain.
Swelling of the gum or face, fever, a bad taste, a bump on the gum and difficulty opening the mouth are important to report. These can indicate infection that needs prompt attention. Severe or rapidly spreading swelling with breathing or swallowing problems requires emergency medical care.
Relief now
Follow package directions for over-the-counter pain relievers, and check with a pharmacist if you have health conditions or take other medications. A cold compress on the cheek may help with swelling. Rinsing gently with warm salt water can soothe irritated gums. Keep your head elevated when resting.
Do not place aspirin or other tablets directly on the gum, as this can burn the tissue. Avoid applying heat to a swollen face. Steer clear of very hot, cold or sweet foods. Do not take more pain medication than recommended, even if pain is intense.
Finding the cause
The dentist examines the painful area, checks for decay, cracks and gum problems and may tap or test the tooth with cold. Your description of the pain and what triggers it helps narrow the possibilities. Sometimes pain is referred from another tooth, so several may be examined.
X-rays reveal decay, infections at root tips, bone changes and impacted teeth that are not visible during the exam. Combining these findings allows the dentist to explain the likely diagnosis and recommend treatment that addresses the source of pain.
Treatment
If the nerve is inflamed or infected, root canal treatment may relieve pain and save the tooth. In some cases, the dentist begins the procedure during an urgent visit. If the tooth cannot be saved, extraction may be recommended. Antibiotics may be prescribed when infection is spreading.
Cracked teeth may need a crown or other restoration. Gum infections may require cleaning. Wisdom tooth pain may be treated with cleaning, medication or removal. The dentist will explain each option, what follow-up is needed and how to manage symptoms afterward.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe your pain, how long it has lasted and any swelling or fever. The team will advise on timing and help you prepare for the visit.
Bring a list of medications you take, including what you have used for pain relief and when.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Lying down can increase blood pressure in the head, which may intensify dental pain. Keeping your head elevated may help. Persistent night pain often signals nerve inflammation.
Pain may ease, but the cause often remains. A nerve that dies may stop hurting while infection develops. Have the tooth examined even if pain subsides.
Antibiotics are prescribed only when clinically appropriate. They do not fix the underlying cause. Do not start leftover antibiotics without guidance.
Severe pain, swelling, fever or a tooth injury warrant prompt dental care. Breathing or swallowing difficulty or rapidly spreading swelling need emergency medical care.
It depends on the cause. If the nerve is irreversibly damaged or infected, a root canal or extraction may be needed. The dentist will explain after examination.
