Explain the pain and its progression

Relief matters, and so does identifying the cause.

Tooth pain that disrupts sleep or eating deserves a prompt call. Describe where it seems to come from, how long it lasts and whether swelling or recent dental work is involved.

Our Port Dover team can discuss urgent assessment arrangements for Norfolk County patients.

What to expect
Dentist listening as an adult patient describes the location and pattern of severe tooth pain

Your care, step by step

Assessing significant tooth pain

01

Hear the symptoms

Explain the onset, pattern and any medicines or remedies already used.

02

Investigate the concern

Examination and relevant records help determine the source and suitable care.

03

Explain the plan

Clarify immediate measures, further treatment and when reassessment is needed.

A detail worth discussing

Pain settling temporarily does not establish that the cause has resolved.

Tell the team if symptoms fluctuate or change after a medicine rather than cancelling an assessment on that basis alone. Describe the product and timing accurately. Do not place aspirin directly against the tooth or gum; ask a professional for appropriate advice while awaiting the arranged assessment.

After the examination, ask which part of the plan addresses the cause and whether another procedure or restoration is required. If the first visit provides initial care only, confirm how completion will be arranged. You should know which changes require another call and when serious symptoms mean seeking medical help instead.

The pattern of a toothache helps guide the investigation

Pain that lingers after a drink, discomfort when biting and an ache that starts without an obvious trigger are different experiences. Describe what you notice in your own words, including whether you can identify one tooth or only a general area. The dentist can then relate those details to the examination instead of assuming every severe toothache has the same cause.

Mention dental work in the affected area, even if it was completed elsewhere. Also explain whether you have been avoiding one side of your mouth or changing what you eat. These observations help show how the concern is affecting you and give the appointment a clearer starting point.

Connect immediate comfort with a plan for the tooth

An urgent assessment should help clarify the problem and the care that may address it. Ask whether the recommendation is intended to preserve the tooth, repair an existing restoration or investigate something that is not yet clear. Discuss alternatives and anticipated costs before deciding on the next procedure.

For Norfolk County patients returning home after initial care, written instructions are useful. Confirm what discomfort should prompt another call and whether a restoration or follow-up procedure remains outstanding. If a referral is required, establish who arranges it. A reduction in pain should not leave you uncertain about whether the treatment plan is finished.

Planning your appointment

Bring an accurate account of what you have taken.

Include medicine names, timing, allergies and any recent dental treatment rather than only saying you used pain relief.

Phone before travelling within Norfolk County so the team can discuss the appropriate appointment and availability.

Before you book

When a toothache becomes severe

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does severe pain always mean I need a root canal?

No. The intensity of pain does not identify a diagnosis or procedure by itself. The dentist needs to examine the area and discuss relevant findings. Ask what is causing the symptoms and why the recommended treatment is appropriate for that cause.

What details should I record before calling?

Note when the pain began, whether it is constant or triggered, and how it affects eating or sleep. Mention swelling, recent treatment and medicines taken. Do not repeatedly test the tooth to recreate symptoms; a clear description of your experience is useful.

Should I cancel if the tooth stops hurting?

Tell the practice about the change before changing your appointment. Symptoms settling does not explain why the tooth hurt or establish that treatment is unnecessary. The team can discuss the updated situation and whether the planned assessment should proceed.

Can I get advice about pain medicine while waiting?

Ask a dentist or pharmacist what is appropriate for your health history and current medicines. Give the names and timing of anything already taken. Do not exceed product instructions or place aspirin against the gum, and do not let temporary relief replace assessment.

What if pain returns after my urgent visit?

Contact the treating office and explain when it returned and whether anything else has changed. Follow the specific instructions you received rather than repeating an old prescription yourself. If serious swelling or breathing or swallowing difficulty develops, seek emergency medical care.
