Pain is a signal

A severe toothache usually means something needs attention.

Toothache can range from a dull ache to sharp, throbbing pain that keeps you awake. Common causes include deep decay, a cracked tooth, an infected nerve, an abscess, gum infection or a wisdom tooth coming through. Pain relief may help temporarily, but the underlying problem usually needs treatment, and some causes can worsen quickly if left alone.

If you are in Nixon and have a severe toothache, call our Port Dover office to describe your symptoms. The team will discuss how soon you should be seen and how to manage the pain until then. Seek emergency medical care right away if any of the urgent warning signs develop.

Describe the pain

The type of pain helps point to the cause.

  • Pain patterns

Note whether the pain is constant or comes and goes, and whether it is triggered by hot, cold, sweet foods or biting. Pain that lingers after cold or heat, or wakes you at night, may suggest the nerve is affected. Sharp pain when biting or releasing can point to a crack. Pain spreading to the ear or jaw is also worth mentioning.

  • Other symptoms

Look for swelling in the gums or face, a bad taste, a pimple on the gum, fever or swollen glands. Note when the pain started and whether it is getting worse. If you recently had dental work or an injury, mention it. These details help the team decide how urgently you need to be seen and what to prepare for.

Easing it at home

Some measures can help while you wait.

  1. Safe pain relief

Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is suitable for you, used exactly as directed on the label. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek may ease discomfort and swelling. Rinse gently with warm salt water and floss to remove any trapped food. Keeping your head raised when resting may reduce throbbing at night.

  2. What to avoid

Do not place aspirin or other tablets directly on the gum, as this can burn the tissue. Avoid applying heat to the face, which may encourage infection to spread. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods and chewing on the affected side. Do not take leftover antibiotics without professional advice, since they may not be appropriate.

Finding the cause

The dentist works to identify what is causing the pain.

Examination and tests

The dentist will ask about your symptoms and examine the painful area. They may tap gently on teeth, test sensitivity to cold, check your bite and look for swelling or gum problems. Some dental pain is felt away from the actual source, so these tests help pinpoint which tooth is responsible and why it is hurting.

X-rays

X-rays help reveal deep decay, infections at the root tip, cracks and problems with wisdom teeth. They also show the bone around the teeth. The dentist will explain what the images show and how they relate to your pain, so you understand the cause before discussing treatment options and what each would involve for you.

Treatment options

Treatment targets the source of the pain.

Immediate treatment

Depending on the cause, the dentist may place a filling, start root canal treatment, drain an abscess, treat a gum infection, adjust a high bite or remove the tooth. Sometimes the first step is relieving pain and controlling infection, with more complete treatment scheduled later. The dentist will explain what can be done right away and why.

Completing care

After emergency care, follow-up treatment such as a crown after a root canal or replacement of a removed tooth may be recommended. Ask about timing and priorities so you can plan return visits from Nixon. Completing treatment helps prevent the pain from returning and protects your tooth and overall health over the longer term, which is the real goal.

Toothache questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

What causes a severe toothache?

Common causes include deep decay, an infected or inflamed nerve, an abscess, a cracked tooth, gum infection or an erupting wisdom tooth. The dentist will examine the tooth and take X-rays to identify the specific cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

Can a toothache go away on its own?

Pain may come and go, but the underlying cause usually remains. If the nerve dies, pain may stop temporarily while infection continues. It is important to have a severe toothache assessed even if it seems to improve.

Should I go to the emergency room for a toothache?

For most toothaches, a dental office is the best place for treatment. Go to the emergency department if you have spreading facial swelling, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or cannot open your mouth. Those signs should never wait.

Can I take antibiotics for a toothache?

Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed for spreading infection, but they do not treat the cause of most toothaches. Do not take leftover antibiotics. The dentist will determine whether they are needed alongside dental treatment for your tooth.

Why does my toothache get worse at night?

Lying down can increase blood flow and pressure in the head, which may intensify throbbing pain. Keeping your head raised may help. Pain that wakes you at night is a sign to have the tooth assessed promptly.
