Severe tooth pain can come from deep decay reaching the nerve, a cracked tooth, an abscess, gum infection, an erupting wisdom tooth or even sinus pressure. The pain may be constant or come in waves, worsen when lying down or be triggered by hot or cold. Painkillers may help briefly, but they do not fix the cause, and some infections can spread if left untreated.
If you are at Long Point with a toothache that will not settle, call our Port Dover office and describe the pain. The team can discuss urgency and arrange an assessment based on clinical need.

Describe the pain
Note whether pain is sharp or dull, constant or intermittent, triggered by hot, cold, sweets or biting, and whether it lingers after the trigger is gone. Pain that wakes you at night or throbs without a trigger often suggests nerve inflammation. Pain on biting may point to a crack or infection at the root.
Swelling of the gum or face, a bad taste, fever, swollen glands or pain spreading to the ear or jaw may indicate infection. Pain across several upper teeth with congestion might be sinus-related. These details help the team judge how soon you should be seen and help the dentist focus the exam.
Interim relief
Use over-the-counter pain relief as directed by a pharmacist or physician, and follow label instructions. Rinse gently with warm salt water. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek may help. Keep your head elevated at night. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods that trigger pain.
Do not place aspirin or other tablets directly on the gum, as this can burn tissue. Avoid applying heat to the face if swelling is present. Do not rely on leftover antibiotics. If swelling spreads or breathing becomes difficult, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Diagnosis and treatment
The dentist examines the area, may tap on teeth, test with cold and take X-rays to identify the source. Sometimes pain is felt in a different tooth from the one causing it, so thorough testing matters. You will hear what is likely causing the pain and what options exist.
Treatment depends on the cause and may include a filling, root canal treatment, draining an abscess, extraction or managing gum infection. If the source is not dental, the dentist may suggest seeing your physician. Some treatments begin the same day; others need a follow-up visit.
Afterward
Some tenderness after treatment is normal. Take medications as instructed and avoid chewing on the treated tooth until advised. Contact the office if pain worsens, swelling increases or a temporary filling comes out. Improvement should be gradual and steady over a few days.
If root canal treatment was started or a temporary restoration placed, keep follow-up appointments. Visitors returning home can ask for records to share with their regular dentist. Completing care prevents the problem from recurring and protects the tooth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 and describe the pain, how long it has lasted and any swelling. The team will discuss the urgency and next available appropriate appointment.
Have your medication and allergy list ready, and mention any recent dental work on the painful tooth.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Pain may come and go, but the underlying cause usually remains. A nerve may die and stop hurting while infection continues. An assessment helps prevent the problem from worsening.
Lying down increases blood flow to the head, which can intensify pressure in an inflamed tooth. Fewer distractions may also make pain more noticeable. Elevating your head may help.
Sinus pressure can cause aching in upper back teeth, often alongside congestion. A dental exam and X-rays can help tell the difference. If no dental cause is found, your physician can help.
Antibiotics are not always appropriate and do not fix the cause. The dentist will decide whether they are needed based on signs of spreading infection and your health.
Keep the appointment. Pain can stop when a nerve dies, but infection may still be present. The dentist can determine whether treatment is still needed to protect your health.
A root canal removes infected or inflamed pulp so a tooth can be kept. Long Point patients can learn what treatment involves and how recovery goes in Port Dover.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: pain, swelling or damage. Long Point residents and visitors can call our Port Dover office to arrange one.
