Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsWhen pain won’t settle
A severe toothache can be constant or come in waves, throb with your heartbeat, worsen when lying down or flare with hot or cold. It often points to inflamed or infected pulp, an abscess, a cracked tooth or advanced decay. Pain relievers may help temporarily, but the cause needs a dentist’s assessment.
When a toothache strikes in Jarvis, call our Port Dover office as soon as you can. The team will ask about your symptoms, discuss urgency and suggest ways to manage the pain until you are seen.

Describe the pain
Pain that lingers after hot or cold, throbs on its own or wakes you at night may suggest pulp inflammation or infection. Sharp pain when biting can indicate a crack or a problem at the root tip. Note when the pain started, what triggers it and whether it is getting worse.
Swelling of the gum or face, a bad taste, a gum pimple, fever or swollen glands can indicate infection. Pain spreading to the ear, jaw or temple is common with dental pain. Sinus pressure can sometimes mimic toothache in upper teeth. Mention all symptoms when you call.
Managing until seen
Take over-the-counter pain relief if it is safe for you, following the label and any advice from your pharmacist. Rinse gently with warm salt water. Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek. Sleep with your head elevated. Avoid chewing on the painful side and avoid very hot or cold foods.
Do not place aspirin or other tablets directly on the gum, which can burn the tissue. Avoid heat on the face. Do not take leftover antibiotics. If pain eases suddenly, the problem may still be present, so keep your appointment and have the tooth assessed.
Diagnosis and care
The dentist examines the area, tests teeth with cold, tapping and biting, and takes X-rays. These help pinpoint which tooth is causing the pain and why. Sometimes the source is not obvious, and the dentist may need to monitor the tooth or perform additional tests.
Treatment may involve a filling for decay, root canal treatment for an inflamed or infected pulp, draining an abscess, repairing a cracked tooth or extraction when the tooth cannot be saved. The dentist will explain the options and may provide immediate relief at the first visit.
After treatment
Some tenderness can remain for a few days after treatment. Follow aftercare instructions and use pain relief as advised. Call the office if pain worsens, swelling increases or you develop a fever. Complete any follow-up treatment, such as a crown after a root canal, to protect the tooth.
Many severe toothaches begin as small problems that went unnoticed. Regular checkups, prompt attention to sensitivity and treating cavities early reduce the chance of severe pain. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard to protect against cracks.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office and describe the pain, how long it has lasted and any swelling or fever. The team will discuss urgency and availability.

Lying down increases blood flow to the head, which can intensify pressure in an inflamed tooth. There are also fewer distractions. Keeping your head elevated may help.
Pain may come and go, but the underlying cause usually remains. If the nerve dies, pain may stop while infection continues. Have the tooth assessed.
Go to hospital for spreading swelling, high fever, breathing or swallowing difficulty or serious injury. For most toothaches, a dentist is the right place for treatment.
Antibiotics may help with spreading infection but do not fix the cause. Dental treatment such as a filling, root canal or extraction is usually needed.
Dental pain often radiates to the ear, jaw or head. The dentist can test teeth to find the source. If no dental cause is found, you may be referred to your doctor.
Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp so a tooth can be kept. Jarvis patients can learn about symptoms, the procedure and recovery at our Port Dover office.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: finding the cause of pain, swelling or damage and relieving it. See what the visit involves for patients from Jarvis.
