Describe the pain and how it is affecting you

The intensity matters, but it does not identify the cause.

A toothache that disrupts sleep or makes eating difficult deserves prompt attention. The source may not be obvious from where you feel the pain, and the treatment cannot be selected from severity alone. An assessment helps establish what needs care and which options are appropriate.

If you are in Delhi, call our Port Dover office with the symptom pattern and any swelling or recent dental work. The team can discuss an available assessment and whether the arrangements need to reflect a changing concern.

Give a clear history

Explain what starts the pain and what happens after the trigger ends.

  • Separate the trigger from the duration of pain

Tell the dentist whether pain occurs on biting, with hot or cold, or without an obvious trigger. Explain whether it fades quickly or lingers, and whether you can identify one tooth or only a general area. There is no need to keep provoking the pain to test it.

  • Include earlier damage, treatment and medicines

Describe a broken filling, recent procedure, injury or swelling and give the names and timing of medicines used for this concern. Include any earlier episode that seemed to settle. That history helps the clinician investigate the source without requiring you to choose extraction, root canal treatment or another procedure before the examination.

While arranging care

Seek appropriate comfort advice while the cause is being assessed.

Use appropriate pain-relief advice and product directions

Ask a pharmacist or clinician about pain relief that is appropriate to your health and current medicines, and follow the product directions. Do not exceed recommended doses or use someone else’s prescription. Pain medicine can change the symptoms without addressing their cause.

Avoid harmful home measures and report warning signs

Do not place aspirin directly against a tooth or gum. Avoid biting on an area that is painful while seeking advice, and report any new swelling or change in your general condition. Serious warning signs should change the plan immediately.

Identify the source

Use the findings to explain the treatment, rather than the pain score alone.

Ask what the investigation has established

The dentist may examine the tooth and nearby structures, check bite contacts and use appropriate tests or images. Ask how the findings relate to your symptom pattern and what remains uncertain. Similar pain descriptions can come from different problems, so the explanation should identify what supports the recommendation for your particular concern.

Connect treatment choices with the diagnosed problem

The options may involve repairing a tooth, addressing an internal problem, treating another diagnosed concern or obtaining specialist input. If removal is discussed, ask which findings affect the possibility of retaining the tooth. Compare suitable alternatives and their limits so the decision addresses the source as well as the immediate discomfort.

Follow through after relief

Keep the completion plan clear when the first treatment brings relief.

  1. Identify the stages still needed after initial relief

Clarify what care was completed, what symptoms may be expected and when further treatment is needed. A temporary restoration or initial procedure may be followed by a separate completion appointment. Keep the instructions even when the tooth starts to feel better.

  2. Provide a new symptom account if pain returns

Contact the provider when pain persists, worsens or changes after treatment. Describe the new timing and triggers, any swelling and what care or medicines have already been provided. Confirm how to obtain advice before the scheduled review; an earlier assessment does not automatically explain every later change in the tooth's behaviour.

Planning your appointment

Call about severe tooth pain before travelling from Delhi.

Tell our Port Dover team how long the pain has been present and whether it affects eating or sleep. Describe swelling and any medical concerns at the start of the call.

Confirm appointment availability and bring current medication information. If timely care cannot be arranged here, seek another available urgent dental provider.

Questions when a toothache becomes severe

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does severe pain mean the tooth must be extracted?

No. Pain intensity does not establish whether a tooth can be retained. The dentist needs to identify the source and assess the tooth’s condition. Ask which options are appropriate and what findings support the proposed treatment.

What if I cannot point to the painful tooth?

Describe the side, area and sensations as accurately as possible. The clinician can investigate the source through examination and appropriate tests. You do not need to identify the exact tooth before calling for assessment.

Can I cancel if pain medicine makes it feel better?

Ask the treating team before changing an assessment plan. Relief from medicine does not explain or remove the underlying cause. Report the improvement along with the original symptoms so appropriate advice can be given.

Should I take leftover antibiotics for toothache?

Do not use leftover or someone else’s antibiotics. The cause needs assessment, and antibiotics are not the appropriate answer to every dental pain problem. A clinician can explain whether medication has a role alongside any needed dental treatment.

What should I report if pain returns after an urgent visit?

Give the timing, triggers and any swelling or change in the bite, along with the care and medicines already provided. Ask whether review is needed sooner. Serious medical warning signs require immediate medical attention rather than a routine callback.
