Relief starts with the cause

Severe tooth pain usually means something needs treatment soon.

A severe toothache can come from deep decay, an inflamed or infected nerve, a cracked tooth, an abscess, gum infection or a problem with a wisdom tooth. Pain may be constant, throbbing or triggered by temperature or biting. Pain relievers can help for a while, but lasting relief generally requires finding and treating the source.

If you are in Brantford with a severe toothache, call our Port Dover office to describe your symptoms. We will discuss availability and how urgent the situation sounds. If pain is unbearable, swelling is spreading or travel would be difficult, seeking care closer to home is a sensible option, and we can help with follow-up afterward.

Managing the pain now

Temporary measures can make waiting easier.

  • Safe pain relief

Over-the-counter pain relievers may help when taken according to package directions, unless a physician has advised you not to take them. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can ease swelling and throbbing. Rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean. Resting with your head raised can sometimes reduce the pounding feeling at night.

  • What to avoid

Do not place aspirin or other tablets directly on the gums, as they can cause chemical burns to the tissue. Avoid applying heat to the face if there is swelling. Steer clear of very hot, cold or sugary foods that trigger pain. Do not delay care hoping the pain will disappear, since it may return or the problem may worsen.

When it’s urgent

Some toothaches need care right away.

Signs needing immediate care

Swelling that spreads, fever, difficulty opening your mouth, trouble breathing or swallowing, or feeling generally very unwell may indicate a spreading infection. These need emergency medical care immediately. Do not drive a long distance to a dental office in these situations; go to the nearest hospital, where airway concerns and serious infections can be managed.

Deciding where to go

For severe pain without these warning signs, call our office to discuss availability. If we cannot see you soon, or the pain is unmanageable, a dentist closer to Brantford may provide faster relief. There is no need to choose between us; our team can offer follow-up care and help complete treatment once the immediate problem is under control.

Diagnosis and treatment

The dentist identifies what’s causing the pain.

Examining the tooth

The dentist asks about your symptoms, examines the area and performs tests such as tapping, biting and cold sensitivity. X-rays help identify decay, infection or bone changes around the roots. Sometimes pain is felt in one tooth but comes from another, or even from the sinuses. A careful assessment helps ensure the right tooth and cause are treated.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the cause and may include a filling, root canal, draining an abscess, treating a gum infection or extracting the tooth. Antibiotics may be prescribed when infection has spread beyond the tooth. The dentist will explain the options, what each involves and the likely outlook, so you can make an informed decision even under pressure.

After treatment

Relief often comes quickly, but follow-up matters.

  1. Healing at home

Follow the instructions you are given about medications, eating and cleaning the area. Some tenderness is normal for a few days after treatment. Contact the office if pain worsens, swelling increases or you develop a fever. For Brantford patients, seek urgent care nearby if severe symptoms appear outside office hours rather than waiting until morning.

  2. Completing care

Many treatments, such as root canals, need further visits for completion or a crown to protect the tooth. Schedule these before you leave, since an unfinished tooth can break or become reinfected. Regular checkups help catch decay and other problems before they cause severe pain, which reduces the chance of another urgent trip.

Toothache questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Why does my tooth hurt more at night?

Lying down can increase blood flow to the head, which may intensify throbbing, and there are fewer distractions at night. Raising your head with an extra pillow may help temporarily until the tooth can be properly assessed.

Can a toothache go away on its own?

Pain may ease for a while, but the underlying problem often remains. If a nerve dies, pain may stop even though infection is still present. The tooth should still be checked by a dentist to prevent later complications.

Should I go to the hospital for a toothache?

Go to the hospital for spreading swelling, fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or uncontrolled bleeding. For tooth pain alone, a dental office is usually the right place, ideally one you can reach without long delays.

Will I need a root canal?

Not necessarily. Toothaches have many possible causes. A root canal may be recommended if the nerve is infected or irreversibly inflamed. The dentist will explain the diagnosis and all reasonable options, including alternatives.

Can antibiotics cure a toothache?

Antibiotics may help control spreading infection, but they do not fix the cause of most toothaches. Dental treatment such as a filling, root canal or extraction is usually needed to resolve the problem for good.
