Dental sedation uses medication to help patients feel relaxed during treatment. Options range from light sedation with nitrous oxide to oral medication that causes deeper relaxation. Sedation can help people with significant anxiety, a strong gag reflex or long procedures. It is used alongside local anaesthetic and requires careful assessment and preparation to be safe.
Walsingham patients interested in sedation can discuss it with the dentist at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your medical history, medications and the planned treatment, then explain which options may be suitable, what preparation is needed and how you will get home afterwards.

Types
Nitrous oxide is breathed through a nose mask and provides light relaxation. It takes effect quickly and wears off soon after the mask is removed. You stay awake and able to respond. Many adults can return to normal activities shortly after treatment.
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment. It produces deeper relaxation, and you may feel drowsy or remember little of the procedure. You remain able to respond to the dental team. A responsible adult must accompany you to and from the appointment and stay with you afterwards.
Assessment
The dentist asks about heart and lung conditions, sleep apnea, pregnancy, liver or kidney problems and previous reactions to sedation or anaesthesia. Some conditions make sedation unsuitable or require consultation with your physician. Being thorough and honest helps the dentist choose a safe approach.
Many medications can interact with sedatives, including some for pain, sleep, anxiety and depression. Alcohol and recreational drugs can also cause dangerous interactions. Bring a complete list of medications and supplements. The dentist will explain whether any adjustments are needed before your appointment.
Preparation
You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a certain time before oral sedation. Take the sedative exactly as prescribed and at the time instructed. Do not take extra doses. Wear comfortable clothing and remove contact lenses. Let the team know if you feel unwell on the day.
For oral sedation, you must not drive yourself. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to the appointment, wait or return to collect you, and stay with you for a period afterwards. Plan the trip between Walsingham and Port Dover in advance so the timing works for your driver.
Recovery
After oral sedation, you may feel drowsy, unsteady or forgetful for several hours. Your companion should help you get home and make sure you rest. Avoid driving, operating machinery, making important decisions or drinking alcohol for the time advised by the dentist.
Follow post-treatment instructions for the dental work you had done, such as eating soft foods or managing tenderness. Contact the office if you feel unusually unwell, have trouble breathing or experience persistent nausea. Let the team know how sedation worked for you, to help plan future visits.
Planning your appointment
Walsingham patients can call our Port Dover office to ask whether sedation may suit their treatment. The dentist will need to review your health before any sedation is booked.
Bring a full list of medications and supplements, and confirm who will drive you if oral sedation is planned.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Dental sedation in the office keeps you awake or easily roused. General anaesthesia, where you are fully unconscious, is usually provided in a hospital or specialized setting.
When properly assessed and monitored, dental sedation is generally safe. The dentist reviews your health and medications carefully before recommending it.
Not after oral sedation. A responsible adult must drive you. Many adults can drive after nitrous oxide once fully recovered, but follow the dentist’s advice.
No. Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the treatment area. Sedation helps you relax but does not stop pain on its own.
Some forms, such as nitrous oxide, may be used for children. Other options depend on the child’s health and needs. The dentist will discuss suitable approaches.
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, can help some patients relax during dental care. Walsingham patients can learn who it suits, how it feels and how recovery works.
