For some people, anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still or a long procedure make dental treatment very hard. Sedation uses medication to help you feel relaxed or drowsy during care. There are different levels and methods, each with its own requirements, benefits and risks, so it is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Walsh patients interested in sedation can discuss it at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your medical history, the treatment needed and your concerns, explain which options may be suitable or available, and talk about preparation, transport home and recovery so nothing on the day comes as a surprise.

Who it helps
Severe dental anxiety, past traumatic experiences, a sensitive gag reflex, difficulty getting numb, certain special needs or lengthy and complex procedures are common reasons sedation is considered. For some people it allows necessary treatment to happen that might otherwise be avoided or postponed for years, often until a problem becomes painful and urgent to deal with.
Some medical conditions, medications, pregnancy, breathing problems or sleep apnea may make certain types of sedation unsuitable, or may require additional precautions and monitoring. The dentist will review these carefully with you. In some cases, referral to another provider or to a hospital setting may be the safer route, and that will be explained openly.
Types
Nitrous oxide is a mild gas breathed through a nose mask that wears off quickly after it is stopped. Oral sedation involves a prescribed pill taken before the appointment, producing deeper relaxation and drowsiness. You remain able to respond to the dentist, but you may remember little of the visit afterwards and will need someone to take you home.
Intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia produce deeper levels and require specialized training, equipment and monitoring, and sometimes a hospital or specialist setting. The dentist will explain which options are available at the office and when referral elsewhere would be more appropriate, so you understand the full range before deciding. Availability of deeper options outside the office can vary.
Preparing
Share your full medical history, medications, supplements and allergies, even ones that seem minor. Follow instructions about eating, drinking and taking your regular medicines before the appointment exactly as given. Wear comfortable clothing with loose sleeves and avoid alcohol beforehand. Ask questions if any instruction is unclear, rather than guessing on the day of treatment.
With oral or deeper sedation, you must not drive afterwards, even if you feel fine. Arrange for a responsible adult to bring you to the Port Dover office, wait or return for you, and take you home to Walsh. They may need to stay with you for some hours after you get home, so plan their day around it in advance.
Recovery
You may feel drowsy, unsteady or forgetful for several hours after oral or deeper sedation. Rest at home, and avoid driving, operating machinery, climbing ladders, making important decisions or drinking alcohol for the rest of the day. Follow the eating and medication instructions provided by the office, and have someone nearby who can help if needed.
Contact the office if you have unexpected symptoms such as prolonged drowsiness, nausea that does not settle or concerns about the treated area. For any breathing difficulty or other medical emergency, call 911 immediately. The office will usually explain who to call after hours before you leave the appointment, so keep that information somewhere easy to find.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office and mention that you are interested in sedation. The dentist will review your health history and discuss suitable options before any treatment is scheduled with you.
Bring a complete list of medications and supplements, and plan who will drive you home if sedation is arranged for you.

Most dental sedation keeps you awake but relaxed. You may feel drowsy and remember little afterward. General anaesthesia, where you are fully unconscious, is a different service usually provided in specialized settings such as hospitals.
Sedation is generally safe when patients are carefully assessed and monitored throughout. The dentist reviews your health history and follows safety protocols. Some people need extra precautions or a different setting for their care to stay safe.
Not after oral or deeper sedation. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and possibly stay with you for a while. Nitrous oxide may have different guidelines, which the office will explain to you beforehand.
No. Sedation helps you relax, but local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated. The two are used together to make the procedure both calm and comfortable, and to keep you pain-free throughout.
The dentist will consider your anxiety level, your health, the procedure and what is available. They will explain the options, benefits and risks and help you decide which approach makes the most sense for you.
