Relaxation with careful planning

Sedation can make dental care possible for people who find it very hard.

Dental sedation uses medication to help you feel relaxed and less aware of the procedure. Depending on the type used, you may feel calm but awake, or drowsy enough that you remember little afterward. Sedation can help people with strong dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, difficulty getting numb or those needing longer or more complex treatment in one sitting.

For patients from Vanessa, sedation involves some extra planning, such as arranging a ride home and time to recover afterward. The dentist at our Port Dover office will review your health and needs, explain which options may be appropriate and give you clear instructions well before the appointment date.

Is it right for you

Sedation is chosen carefully, case by case.

Reasons to consider sedation

People who feel extremely anxious about dental care, have had traumatic past experiences, struggle with gagging or need several procedures done at once may benefit from sedation. It can help some people with special needs receive care more comfortably. Sedation does not replace local anaesthetic, which is still used to numb the area being treated during the procedure.

Health factors to review

The dentist reviews your medical history, medications, allergies and any breathing or heart conditions before recommending sedation. Some conditions, medications or pregnancy may make certain types unsuitable. Be honest about alcohol use, recreational drugs and supplements, since they can affect how sedatives work and how safe they are for you. This information stays confidential and is used only to plan care.

Types of sedation

Different levels suit different needs.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is breathed through a small nose mask. It produces a light, relaxed feeling and wears off quickly after the gas is stopped. Many adults can drive afterward once the dentist confirms it is safe. It is a common option for mild to moderate anxiety and for children who need help settling.

Oral and other sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill before the appointment, which produces deeper relaxation and drowsiness. You remain able to respond but may remember little. Other forms of sedation, including those requiring specialized monitoring, may involve referral. The dentist will explain what is available, how each works and the safety measures involved at every stage.

Preparing

Careful preparation helps keep sedation safe.

  • Following instructions

Follow all instructions about eating and drinking before your appointment, since some types of sedation require an empty stomach. Take or hold medications only as the dentist and your physician advise. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up. Do not drink alcohol beforehand, and let the team know if you feel unwell on the day.

  • Arranging support

For oral or deeper sedation, you must have a responsible adult drive you to and from the appointment and stay with you afterward. Do not plan to drive, operate machinery, sign important documents or make major decisions for the rest of the day. Arrange childcare or help with farm chores and animals ahead of time if needed.

Recovery

Rest and supervision help you recover smoothly.

  1. The rest of the day

After oral or deeper sedation, you may feel drowsy, unsteady or forgetful for several hours. Rest at home with your support person nearby. Drink fluids and eat light meals when you feel ready, following any instructions about the dental treatment itself. Avoid alcohol and do not drive until the next day or as advised by the dentist.

  2. When to call

Call the office if you have unusual drowsiness, nausea or vomiting that will not settle, or concerns about recovery. For trouble breathing, chest pain or any severe reaction, call 911 immediately. Follow aftercare instructions for the dental work, such as caring for extraction sites or managing sensitivity. Your support person should keep the written instructions handy in case questions come up later.

Sedation questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be asleep during sedation?

With most dental sedation, you remain conscious and able to respond, though you may feel very relaxed or drowsy and remember little. Deeper levels require specialized monitoring and may involve a referral. The dentist will explain what to expect.

Can I drive after sedation?

After nitrous oxide, many adults can drive once the dentist confirms they have recovered. After oral or deeper sedation, you must not drive for the rest of the day and need a responsible adult to take you home.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation is generally safe when properly planned and monitored. The dentist reviews your health history and medications to choose an appropriate option. Following preparation and recovery instructions carefully helps reduce risks, and you can ask any questions beforehand.

Does sedation replace local anaesthetic?

No. Sedation helps you relax, but local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated. Together, they help keep you comfortable during the procedure. The dentist checks that you are numb before starting any work, even when sedation is used.

Can children have sedation?

Some children benefit from nitrous oxide or other sedation for dental care. The dentist will review your child’s health and needs and explain whether sedation is appropriate, or whether a referral to a pediatric specialist is recommended.
