Every dental service for Townsend

Comfort for difficult visits

Sedation is chosen carefully, based on your health and needs.

For some patients, anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still or a lengthy procedure can make dental care very hard. Sedation can help by reducing anxiety and making treatment feel more manageable. Options range from mild relaxation with nitrous oxide to oral medications, and each has different preparation and recovery requirements.

Patients from Townsend can discuss whether sedation might be appropriate at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your medical history, medications and the treatment planned, explain the options that may suit you and outline what preparation, monitoring and recovery would involve before anything is arranged.

Is sedation right for you?

Sedation is not one-size-fits-all.

Situations where sedation may help

Sedation may be considered for people with significant dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, teeth that are hard to numb, certain physical or developmental needs or procedures that simply take a long time. It is not necessary for everyone. Many anxious patients manage well with other strategies, such as shorter visits, clear explanations and an agreed signal for breaks.

Health factors that matter

Your health history shapes which options are safe. Breathing conditions, heart problems, sleep apnea, pregnancy, current medications and any previous reactions to sedation all need to be shared in full. In some situations, deeper sedation is better provided in another setting or by a specialist, and the dentist will be clear with you if that applies.

Types of sedation

Different levels suit different needs.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is breathed through a small nose mask and gives a light, adjustable sense of relaxation. You stay awake and able to respond, and the effects usually fade within minutes once the gas is switched off. It is often used for mild to moderate anxiety, and many adults can drive afterwards, although you should confirm this with the dentist first.

Oral sedation and other approaches

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed tablet before the appointment to help you feel calmer. You may feel drowsy and remember little of the visit, so a responsible adult needs to take you home and stay with you. Deeper forms of sedation are generally arranged through a specialist or a different clinical setting, rather than in a standard appointment.

Preparing safely

Preparation is essential for safe sedation.

  • Following instructions carefully

Follow every instruction you are given about eating, drinking and medications before the appointment, since these are set for safety reasons. The dentist will tell you whether to take your usual medications on the day. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoid alcohol beforehand and let the office know right away if you develop a cold or feel unwell.

  • Arranging support

For oral sedation or anything deeper, arrange for a responsible adult to come with you, drive you home and stay with you for some hours afterwards. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. You should not drive, operate machinery, sign important documents or look after young children on your own until the effects have fully worn off.

Recovery

Recovery depends on the type of sedation.

  1. Monitoring and going home

The team will monitor you during and after treatment and make sure you are ready before you leave the office. With nitrous oxide, recovery is usually quick. With oral sedation, you may feel sleepy or unsteady for several hours, so your companion will be given the aftercare instructions as well, in case you do not remember them clearly later.

  2. The rest of the day

At home, rest, drink fluids and eat light meals once any numbness has worn off. Follow the aftercare instructions for both the sedation and the dental treatment itself. Contact the office if you have concerns, and seek medical help straight away if you experience breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness or any other unusual symptoms.

Questions about dental sedation

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be unconscious during sedation?

Most dental sedation keeps you awake but relaxed. With nitrous oxide you remain aware, while oral sedation may leave you drowsy with little memory of the visit. Deeper sedation is a separate option that usually requires a specialist or another setting.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation is generally safe when your health history is carefully reviewed and preparation instructions are followed closely. The dentist will assess your suitability and monitor you during treatment. Be completely open about all medications and medical conditions.

Can I drive after sedation?

It depends on the type. Some adults can drive after nitrous oxide once fully recovered, but oral sedation always requires someone else to drive you home. Follow the dentist’s specific instructions for your appointment rather than guessing.

Do I still need local anaesthetic with sedation?

Usually, yes. Sedation helps you relax, while local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated. Together they help make treatment more comfortable for anxious patients and for those having longer or more involved procedures.

Can children have dental sedation?

Some children may benefit from nitrous oxide or other options, depending on their age, health and treatment needs. The dentist will discuss suitability with you and may recommend referral to a pediatric specialist in some situations.
