Calmer appointments

Sedation is one tool among several for making care more comfortable.

For people with significant dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty getting numb or long and complex procedures, sedation can make treatment easier to tolerate. Different levels exist, from mild relaxation with nitrous oxide to deeper sedation that may require specialized settings. Each has its own health requirements, preparation steps and recovery instructions that need to be followed carefully.

If you live in Teeterville and are wondering whether sedation might help, start with a conversation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health and the planned treatment, explain which options may be available and discuss whether referral to another setting would be more appropriate.

Is it right for you

Suitability depends on you and the procedure.

Reasons sedation may be discussed

Sedation may be considered when anxiety prevents someone from getting necessary care, when a gag reflex makes treatment very difficult or when several procedures are combined into one visit. It is not automatically the best choice for everyone with nerves. Some people do well with gentler approaches like extra time, explanations and breaks, which carry fewer requirements.

Health factors that matter

Your medical history, medications, breathing, weight, sleep apnea, pregnancy and previous experiences with sedation or anaesthesia all affect safety. Share everything honestly, including alcohol use and recreational substances. The dentist may need to consult your physician. A careful review helps choose the appropriate level and setting for your care. Some details may need confirming with your doctor first.

Types of sedation

Levels range from light relaxation to deeper sedation.

Inhaled and oral sedation

Nitrous oxide is breathed through a nose mask and wears off fairly quickly. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment, which causes drowsiness that can last for hours. With both, you generally remain awake and able to respond. The dentist will explain which options are offered and what each one feels like.

Deeper sedation and referral

Intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia produce deeper levels of sedation and require additional training, monitoring and sometimes a hospital or specialist setting. If these are more appropriate for your needs, the dentist can discuss a referral. Ask what each option involves, including preparation, risks and recovery time. Referral may also affect how soon treatment can begin.

Preparing

Preparation is a key part of safety.

  • Following instructions closely

You may receive instructions about eating and drinking before the appointment, taking or pausing certain medications and what to wear. Follow them exactly, and call the office if you are unsure about anything. Let the team know if you develop a cold, fever or other illness before the visit, since it may affect whether sedation can proceed.

  • Arranging a companion

For oral or deeper sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and, in many cases, stay with you for some time afterward. Plan the trip back to Teeterville in advance. Do not plan to work, operate machinery or make important decisions for the rest of the day after oral or deeper sedation.

Afterwards

Rest and supervision help recovery go smoothly.

  1. The rest of the day

Drowsiness, unsteadiness and memory gaps are common after oral or deeper sedation. Rest at home, drink fluids and start with light food when you feel ready. Follow the aftercare instructions for the dental treatment itself as well, such as pain relief and care for extraction sites. Avoid alcohol for the remainder of the day as well.

  2. When to call for help

Contact the office if you have prolonged nausea, vomiting or unusual drowsiness. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, chest pain or confusion. Afterward, let the team know how you found the experience, as this helps them plan future appointments and decide whether to adjust the approach next time. Honest feedback is always useful to them.

Sedation questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be unconscious during sedation?

With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, most people stay awake but relaxed. Deeper sedation and general anaesthesia produce lower levels of awareness and require specialized settings. The dentist will explain what to expect with each option.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

For oral or deeper sedation, yes. You should not drive or travel alone afterward. With nitrous oxide, many adults can drive once the effects wear off, but ask the dentist to confirm for your situation.

Is sedation safe?

When properly assessed and monitored, sedation is commonly used in dentistry. Safety depends on careful screening of your health, following preparation instructions and having appropriate monitoring during treatment. Ask the dentist any safety questions you have beforehand.

Can I eat before sedation?

Instructions vary depending on the type of sedation. You may be asked to avoid food and drink for a period beforehand. Follow the office’s specific instructions and ask if anything is unclear before the day.

Does sedation replace local anaesthetic?

Usually not. Sedation helps with relaxation, while local anaesthetic numbs the treatment area. Most procedures under sedation still use freezing to keep the area comfortable. The dentist will explain how the two are combined for your procedure.
