Caring for St. Williams patients at our office in Port Dover
Every dental service for St. WilliamsWhen extra support helps
Sedation in dentistry ranges from mild relaxation with nitrous oxide to deeper levels using oral or other medications. It may help people with significant anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty getting numb or those undergoing longer or more complex procedures. Each type has different effects, preparation requirements and recovery considerations.
St. Williams residents interested in sedation can discuss it with our Port Dover team before treatment. The dentist will review your medical history, medications and the planned procedure and explain which options may be suitable, along with arrangements such as having someone drive you home.

Who it helps
People with moderate to severe dental anxiety, past traumatic dental experiences or difficulty sitting still for long periods may benefit from sedation. It can also help those with a sensitive gag reflex. Discuss your concerns openly so the dentist can recommend an approach that suits your needs.
Longer procedures, such as multiple extractions or complex restorative work, are sometimes easier with sedation. Combining several treatments into fewer appointments may be possible in some cases. The dentist will consider whether sedation is appropriate for the specific procedure planned.
Types
Nitrous oxide is breathed through a nose mask and provides mild relaxation that wears off quickly. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment, producing deeper relaxation. You remain conscious with both, though oral sedation may leave you drowsy and with limited memory of the procedure.
Intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia provide deeper levels of sedation and require specialized training and monitoring. These may be offered through referral to a specialist or a hospital setting. The dentist will explain which options are available and appropriate for you.
Preparing
Provide a complete medical history, including medications, supplements, allergies and conditions such as heart, lung or sleep problems. The dentist may need to consult your physician. Follow instructions about eating and drinking before the appointment and about taking or holding regular medications.
For oral sedation and deeper levels, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment and stay with you afterward. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid driving, operating machinery or making important decisions until the effects have fully worn off.
Recovery
After oral or deeper sedation, you may feel drowsy, unsteady or forgetful for several hours. Rest at home with your support person nearby. Drink fluids and eat light foods when ready. Follow post-procedure instructions for the dental treatment itself, such as care after extractions.
Contact the office if you have unexpected side effects, prolonged drowsiness or concerns about recovery. Seek emergency medical care for breathing difficulty or other serious symptoms. Share feedback about your experience so future sedation plans can be adjusted if needed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and let us know you would like to discuss sedation. The team will arrange a consultation to review your health and the planned treatment.
Because sedation usually requires a driver, plan your travel to and from St. Williams with a trusted adult who can stay with you afterward.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you remain conscious but relaxed. Deeper sedation and general anaesthesia produce lower levels of awareness and are provided in suitable settings.
Sedation is used routinely with appropriate assessment and monitoring. The dentist will review your health history to determine whether it is suitable for you.
For oral sedation and deeper levels, yes. You should not drive or travel alone afterward. Nitrous oxide may allow you to drive once its effects have worn off, if the dentist agrees.
With oral and deeper sedation, many people have limited memory of the procedure. With nitrous oxide, you are usually aware throughout.
Some forms may be used for children when appropriate. The dentist will explain options and may refer to a pediatric specialist for deeper sedation.
Nitrous oxide can help some nervous patients feel more relaxed during treatment. St. Williams patients can ask whether it is suitable for them at our Port Dover office.
Fear of the dentist is common and worth talking about. St. Williams patients can share what worries them and plan comfort strategies with our Port Dover team.
