Comfort planned around your health

The right level of sedation depends on you and the procedure.

Sedation is used to help people feel more relaxed during dental treatment, particularly those with anxiety, a strong gag reflex or a long or complex procedure ahead. It ranges from mild sedation, where you are calm but awake, to deeper levels that require specialized monitoring and may be provided in another setting. Each type has different preparation and recovery requirements.

Silver Hill patients interested in sedation can talk with the dentist at our Port Dover office about which options might suit them. The discussion covers your medical history, medications, the treatment planned and practical matters such as transport and supervision afterward, before any decision is made.

Understanding levels

Sedation is not one single thing.

Mild and moderate sedation

Mild sedation, such as nitrous oxide, helps you relax while staying awake and responsive. Moderate sedation, which may involve oral medication, can make you drowsy and less aware of the procedure, though you can still respond to instructions. Local anaesthetic is usually still needed to numb the tooth, since sedation alone does not block pain.

Deeper sedation and general anaesthesia

Deep sedation and general anaesthesia make you largely or completely unaware during treatment and require specialized training, equipment and monitoring. These are often provided by an anaesthesia team or in a hospital or specialist setting. If deeper sedation seems appropriate, the dentist will explain whether a referral is needed.

Assessing suitability

Your health history guides which options are appropriate.

  • Health factors to discuss

Heart and lung conditions, sleep apnea, pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, and certain medications can affect whether sedation is safe and which type is suitable. Bring a complete list of medications and supplements, including any that cause drowsiness. The dentist may need to coordinate with your physician before treatment can be planned.

  • Previous experiences

Tell the dentist about past experiences with sedation or anaesthesia, including any reactions, nausea or difficulty waking. Mention if you have had trouble with freezing not working well. These details help the dentist choose an approach that is more likely to keep you comfortable and safe during the planned procedure.

Preparing for the day

Preparation instructions are specific to the type of sedation.

  1. Following fasting and medication instructions

Depending on the sedation planned, you may be asked to avoid food and drink for a set period beforehand, or to take or skip certain medications. Follow these instructions exactly, and ask if anything is unclear. Do not take additional sedating medications or alcohol unless the treating clinician has told you to.

  2. Arranging transport and support

For oral or deeper sedation, you will usually need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a period afterward. Arrange this well in advance, especially if you live outside town and the drive is longer. Wear comfortable clothing and leave valuables and jewellery at home.

Recovery

Plan for a quiet rest after sedation.

The first hours after sedation

After moderate or deeper sedation, you may feel drowsy, unsteady or forgetful for several hours. Rest at home for the remainder of the day. Avoid driving, operating machinery, making important decisions or drinking alcohol until the effects have fully worn off, following the specific timing the dentist gives you.

When to call for help

Follow the aftercare instructions for both the sedation and the dental procedure. Eat light foods once you feel ready and the numbness has worn off. Contact the office or seek medical help if you have difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, severe drowsiness or any symptom that concerns you or your support person.

Sedation questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be asleep during sedation?

It depends on the type. Mild and moderate sedation help you relax while staying awake or drowsy. Deep sedation and general anaesthesia make you largely unaware. The dentist will explain exactly what level is planned so you know what to expect beforehand.

Is dental sedation safe?

Sedation is generally safe when patients are carefully assessed and properly monitored. Your health history, medications and the type of sedation all matter. The dentist will review these factors and explain any risks specific to your situation before treatment.

Do I still need freezing with sedation?

Usually, yes. Most forms of sedation help you relax but do not numb the tooth. Local anaesthetic is often still used to keep the treatment area comfortable. The dentist will explain how the two are combined for your particular procedure.

Can I drive after sedation?

After moderate or deeper sedation, you should not drive for the period the dentist advises. You will need someone to take you home and, often, to stay with you. After nitrous oxide, many adults can drive once it has cleared, but confirm first.

Can children have sedation?

Some children may be suitable for certain types of sedation, depending on their age, health and treatment needs. Deeper sedation for children is often provided in specialized settings. The dentist will discuss options and any referrals with parents.
