Comfort with careful planning

Sedation is a medical decision, not just a comfort add-on.

Dental sedation uses medication to help patients feel more relaxed during treatment. Levels range from light sedation, where you remain fully awake, to deeper forms that require more monitoring and preparation. Sedation can help with anxiety, a strong gag reflex or longer procedures, but it is not suitable for everyone and carries its own considerations.

Because some forms of sedation mean you cannot drive afterward, Selkirk patients need to plan transportation home from Port Dover in advance. The dentist at our Port Dover office will review your health, explain which options may be available for your treatment and outline the preparation and aftercare involved.

Types of sedation

Different approaches suit different needs.

Inhaled and oral sedation

Nitrous oxide is breathed through a nose mask and wears off quickly. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill before the appointment, producing a drowsier, more relaxed state that lasts longer. With oral sedation you usually remain awake but may remember little of the visit. The dentist will explain what each option feels like and how long it lasts.

Deeper sedation and referral

Intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia provide deeper levels of sedation and require specialized training, equipment and monitoring. These may be offered by certain providers or in hospital settings, and a referral may be suggested. The dentist will explain which levels are appropriate for your situation and where they can be provided.

Safety first

A thorough health review comes first.

  • Medical history matters

Share your full medical history, including heart and lung conditions, sleep apnea, liver or kidney problems, pregnancy, allergies and all medications and supplements. Some medications interact with sedatives. Alcohol and recreational drug use should also be disclosed honestly, as they can affect how sedation works and how safe it is for you.

  • Who may not be suited

Sedation may not be appropriate for people with certain medical conditions or those taking particular medications. In some cases, the dentist may consult your physician before proceeding. If sedation is not suitable, other strategies such as careful communication, breaks, local anaesthetic techniques or nitrous oxide alone may be considered instead.

Preparing for the day

Preparation keeps sedation safer.

  1. Following pre-visit instructions

Follow instructions about eating and drinking before your appointment carefully, as these vary with the type of sedation. Take or skip your regular medications only as directed. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up. Remove nail polish if asked, as it can interfere with monitoring equipment used during treatment.

  2. Arranging an escort

For oral or deeper sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and possibly stay with you for several hours afterward. Do not plan to drive, operate machinery, make important decisions or drink alcohol for the rest of the day. Arrange this in advance so that the appointment can go ahead as planned.

Recovery

Give yourself time to recover fully.

The rest of the day

After oral or deeper sedation, you may feel drowsy, unsteady or forgetful for several hours. Rest at home, have someone nearby and drink fluids. Eat light foods once you feel ready, following any dental aftercare instructions. Avoid driving and other risky activities until the following day or as the dentist advises.

Reporting concerns

Contact the office if you experience unusual drowsiness, nausea that does not settle or other concerns after sedation. Seek emergency medical care for breathing difficulty or if someone cannot be woken. Let the team know how the experience went, as this information helps plan future appointments more effectively.

Sedation questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be asleep during sedation?

With most dental sedation, such as nitrous oxide or oral sedation, you remain awake but relaxed. Deeper forms, like IV sedation or general anaesthesia, have different effects and may require referral. The dentist will explain what applies to your planned treatment.

Can I drive after sedation?

After nitrous oxide alone, many people can drive once cleared by the dentist. After oral or deeper sedation, you must not drive for the rest of the day and will need someone to take you home. Plan this well before your appointment.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation is generally safe when patients are carefully assessed and monitored, but it carries risks. A thorough review of your health and medications helps the dentist decide whether it is appropriate and which type is most suitable for you.

Can children have sedation?

Some children may be candidates for certain types of sedation, depending on their health, age and needs. Decisions are made individually. The dentist will discuss options and may recommend a referral to a pediatric specialist or hospital setting.

Does sedation replace numbing?

No. Sedation helps you relax, but local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated. The two are commonly used together to make dental procedures as comfortable as possible, both physically and emotionally.
