Dental sedation uses medication to help patients feel more relaxed during treatment. Options range from mild sedation, such as nitrous oxide, to oral medications that produce deeper relaxation. Sedation may help people with significant anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still or longer procedures. It is not right for everyone, and each type has its own preparation, monitoring and recovery requirements.
Long Point patients can ask our Port Dover team whether sedation might suit them. The dentist will review medical history, medications and the planned treatment before recommending any approach.

Types of sedation
Nitrous oxide, breathed through a nose mask, provides mild relaxation and wears off quickly. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment and creates a deeper sense of calm, though you remain responsive. The dentist will explain how each option feels and what level of relaxation to expect during the procedure.
Some patients or procedures may require deeper sedation or general anaesthesia, which is typically provided by specially trained practitioners in appropriate settings. If this is the case, the dentist will discuss referral. Ask which options are available for your specific treatment and where care would take place.
Suitability
Share your complete medical history, including heart and lung conditions, sleep apnea, pregnancy, allergies and all medications and supplements. The dentist evaluates whether sedation is safe and which type is appropriate. In some cases, input from your physician may be requested before proceeding with treatment.
Certain conditions, medications or recent alcohol use may make some types of sedation unsuitable. Body weight, age and previous reactions to sedatives also matter. The dentist will explain any limitations and suggest alternatives if sedation is not advisable for you.
Preparation
You may be given instructions about eating and drinking beforehand, when to take sedation medication and which regular medications to continue or pause. Follow these exactly. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid alcohol. Tell the team if you feel unwell on the day, since a cold or fever may require rescheduling.
For oral sedation and deeper levels, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment and stay with you afterward. You should not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for the rest of the day. Plan transportation before booking, particularly if you are staying at a cottage.
Recovery
After oral sedation, you may feel drowsy for several hours and have limited memory of the appointment. Rest at home with someone present. Drink fluids and eat light foods when you feel ready. Follow the dentist’s instructions for the dental procedure as well, since numbness and tenderness may continue.
At your next visit, share how the sedation felt and whether it helped. If you felt too drowsy, nauseated or not relaxed enough, the approach can be adjusted. Over time, some patients find they need less sedation as they become more comfortable with the team.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention you would like to discuss sedation. Ask what information the dentist needs and whether a consultation should come before treatment is scheduled.
Arrange a driver in advance for oral sedation, and bring a complete list of medications and medical conditions.

With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you typically remain awake and able to respond, though you may feel very relaxed and remember little. Deeper sedation or general anaesthesia is different and usually arranged separately.
After oral sedation or deeper levels, you must not drive. Arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you. Nitrous oxide alone may allow driving after recovery, depending on advice.
Sedation is generally safe when used appropriately with careful screening and monitoring. The dentist reviews your health to determine suitability and explains any risks before proceeding.
No. Sedation helps you relax but does not numb the tooth. Local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that would otherwise be uncomfortable during treatment.
Some children may be candidates for certain types of sedation, depending on age, health and the procedure. The dentist will discuss options and may suggest referral for deeper sedation.
Nitrous oxide is a mild, breathable sedative that can ease dental worry. Long Point patients can ask whether it suits them at our Port Dover office.
Putting off the dentist because of fear is common. Long Point patients can explain what worries them and plan a more manageable visit with our Port Dover team.
