For some people, dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty getting numb or the length of a procedure make treatment hard to tolerate. Sedation uses medication to help you feel relaxed and calm during care. Options range from mild sedation, where you remain fully awake, to deeper levels that require more preparation, monitoring and recovery time afterwards.
Patients from Langton considering sedation can discuss it during a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist reviews your medical history, medications and the planned treatment, explains which forms of sedation may be suitable and outlines the preparation, transportation and recovery arrangements needed. Some types of sedation may require referral to another setting.

Types of sedation
Nitrous oxide, breathed through a nose mask, provides mild relaxation and wears off quickly. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed pill before the appointment to help you feel calm and drowsy, though you remain awake and able to respond. The dentist will explain how each works, how long the effects last and what you should expect to feel.
Intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia produce deeper levels of sedation and require specialized training, equipment and monitoring. These may be provided by a dental specialist, an anaesthetist or in a hospital setting. If your needs call for deeper sedation, the dentist can discuss whether referral is appropriate and what that process would involve for you.
Is it right for you?
The dentist needs a complete picture of your health, including heart and lung conditions, sleep apnea, pregnancy, liver or kidney problems, medications, supplements, alcohol use and any previous reactions to sedation or anaesthesia. Some conditions make certain types of sedation unsuitable or require extra precautions. Be honest and thorough so the safest option can be chosen.
For mild to moderate anxiety, strategies such as clear explanations, breaks, stop signals, music and breathing techniques may be enough. Many patients find these helpful, either on their own or alongside nitrous oxide. The dentist can help you decide whether sedation is necessary or whether these approaches might be worth trying first for your next visit.
Preparation
Depending on the type of sedation, you may be asked not to eat or drink for a certain time beforehand. You may need to take or skip particular medications. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and avoid makeup, nail polish and jewellery if advised. Follow the specific written instructions provided, and call the office if anything is unclear before your appointment.
For oral sedation or deeper sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment and stay with you afterwards. Do not plan to drive, operate farm or other machinery, make important decisions or drink alcohol for the rest of the day. Arrange transportation well in advance, since the trip home must be planned.
Recovery
After sedation, you may feel drowsy, unsteady or forgetful for several hours. Rest at home with your escort nearby. Start with clear fluids and soft foods once you feel ready. Follow any instructions about pain relief and caring for the treated area. Avoid stairs and tasks that need balance until you feel steady on your feet.
Contact the office if you have unexpected side effects such as persistent nausea, difficulty staying awake or any concerns about how you feel. Seek emergency medical help for difficulty breathing or chest pain. At your next visit, let the team know how the sedation worked for you, so future appointments can be planned accordingly and adjusted if needed.
Planning your appointment
Book a consultation at our Port Dover office to talk about sedation options. Bring a complete list of your medications and health conditions, and mention what has made past appointments difficult for you.
If sedation is recommended, plan a driver and a quiet rest of the day before booking the treatment appointment itself.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
With mild or moderate sedation, you are usually awake but relaxed and may remember little of the appointment. Deeper sedation and general anaesthesia produce sleep-like states and are typically provided in specialized settings. The dentist will explain what each option involves.
Sedation is generally safe when patients are carefully screened and properly monitored. The dentist reviews your medical history to choose an appropriate option. Share all health information honestly, including medications and supplements, to support your safety.
Not after oral, intravenous or deeper sedation. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you. Many adults can drive after nitrous oxide alone once it has worn off, but follow the dentist’s advice.
No. Sedation helps you relax, but local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated. The two are often used together so you feel both calm and physically comfortable during the whole procedure.
The dentist can suggest other ways to manage anxiety and comfort, such as communication strategies, shorter appointments or nitrous oxide. If deeper sedation is needed and cannot be provided in the office, referral to another setting may be discussed.
Nitrous oxide can help some patients feel more relaxed during dental care. Langton patients can learn how it works, who may suit it and what recovery is like.
If fear has kept you away from the dentist, you are not alone. Langton patients can plan a calmer, more predictable visit with our team in Port Dover.
