Dental sedation uses medicine to help you feel calm and relaxed during treatment. It can range from mild relaxation with nitrous oxide to deeper levels using oral medicines. Sedation may help people with significant anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still or those having longer procedures.
For La Salette patients, sedation planning starts with a conversation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health, the treatment needed and your comfort goals, then explain which options may be suitable and what preparation each involves, including transportation home.

Is it right for you
Sedation may help those who avoid care due to anxiety, have had difficult experiences, need extensive treatment or find it hard to stay comfortable for long periods. It is also sometimes used for people with certain special needs. The dentist will discuss whether sedation is appropriate for your situation.
Your medical history, medicines, allergies, breathing conditions and previous reactions to sedatives all affect whether sedation is safe. Pregnancy, sleep apnea and some heart or lung conditions require careful consideration. Be open about your health so the dentist can make a safe recommendation.
Types of sedation
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative breathed through a nose mask. It wears off quickly once stopped, and many adults can drive afterward if advised. It suits people with mild to moderate anxiety and can be adjusted during treatment.
Oral sedation involves taking medicine before the appointment, producing deeper relaxation. You remain conscious but may feel drowsy and remember little. A responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you. Deeper sedation levels may require referral to a specialist setting.
Preparing
You may receive specific instructions about eating, drinking and medicines before your appointment. Follow them exactly. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid alcohol beforehand. Tell the team if you develop a cold, fever or other illness before the visit, as it may need rescheduling.
For oral sedation, arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment and stay with you afterward. You should not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for the rest of the day. Plan your schedule accordingly.
After sedation
After oral sedation, rest at home with your companion. You may feel drowsy for several hours. Eat light foods when ready and follow any instructions about pain relief and the dental treatment itself. Avoid driving and alcohol until the effects have fully worn off.
Contact the office if you have unexpected effects, such as prolonged drowsiness, nausea or confusion. For difficulty breathing or other serious symptoms, seek emergency medical care. Share your experience at your next visit so the dentist can adjust plans if needed.
Planning your appointment
Ask about sedation when you book at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health and explain options, preparation and transportation requirements before treatment.
Plan your ride home in advance, since you will not be able to drive yourself after oral sedation.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
With nitrous oxide and most oral sedation, you remain conscious but relaxed. You may feel drowsy and remember little. Deeper sedation levels are different and may require a specialist setting.
For oral sedation, yes. A responsible adult must drive you and stay with you afterward. After nitrous oxide alone, many adults can drive once the effects wear off, if the dentist advises.
When planned carefully with a full health review, sedation is commonly used safely. The dentist will assess your health and medicines before recommending an option.
Follow the specific instructions you receive. Some types of sedation require limiting food and drink beforehand. Ask the office if you are unsure.
Some children may benefit from nitrous oxide or other options, depending on their needs and health. The dentist will discuss whether sedation is appropriate for your child.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, can take the edge off dental nerves. La Salette patients can learn who may be suitable, how it feels and how recovery goes.
Nervous about the dentist? La Salette patients can tell our Port Dover team what triggers their worry and plan signals, pacing and comfort options.
