Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsComfort for difficult visits
Sedation uses medication to help patients feel more relaxed during dental treatment. Options range from mild, such as nitrous oxide, to deeper forms that may be provided in specialized settings. The right choice depends on your health, anxiety level, the procedure planned and what is available, and every option has its own preparation and safety requirements.
A sedated appointment means a Jarvis patient will likely need a driver for the trip home from Port Dover. Before anything is booked, the dentist will review your health and explain which approaches are appropriate.

Is it right for you
Significant dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty staying still, longer or complex procedures and certain special needs are common reasons sedation is discussed. It can make treatment more manageable for people who otherwise avoid care. The dentist will ask about your experiences and what you hope sedation will help with.
For mild anxiety, techniques such as clear communication, breaks and numbing gels may be enough. Some health conditions, medications and pregnancy can affect which sedation options are safe. The dentist will explain the risks and benefits honestly and may suggest consulting your physician.
Types of sedation
Minimal sedation, such as nitrous oxide or an oral medication taken before the appointment, helps you feel calmer while remaining awake and responsive. Recovery from nitrous oxide is quick, while oral medications last longer and usually require someone to drive you home.
Moderate sedation produces deeper relaxation, and you may remember little of the procedure. Deeper sedation or general anaesthesia may require a specialist or hospital setting. The dentist will explain which options are offered at the office and when a referral is more appropriate.
Preparing safely
Share your complete medical history, all medications and supplements, allergies and any previous reactions to sedation or anaesthesia. Conditions such as sleep apnea, heart or lung disease and pregnancy are especially important. Follow all instructions about eating, drinking and taking regular medications before the appointment.
Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and, depending on the type of sedation, stay with you afterward. Do not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions for the rest of the day if advised. Wear comfortable clothing and leave valuables at home.
After sedation
The team monitors you until you are alert enough to leave. You may feel drowsy, a little unsteady or have gaps in memory. Your companion should receive the aftercare instructions as well, since you may not remember them clearly. Take your time moving from the chair.
Rest at home and follow instructions for the dental treatment itself, including pain relief and eating. Avoid alcohol for the period advised. Contact the office if you have unusual symptoms, and seek emergency care for breathing difficulty or severe reactions.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to ask about sedation for an upcoming procedure. Mention your concerns and medical conditions so the team can discuss suitable options.
Plan for a driver and, if needed, someone to stay with you after the appointment, and follow all fasting instructions given.

Most dental sedation keeps you awake but relaxed. Deeper sedation or general anaesthesia is a different level of care and is usually provided in specialized settings.
When properly assessed and monitored, sedation is generally safe for suitable patients. The dentist reviews your health to determine which options are appropriate.
For most sedation other than nitrous oxide, yes. Plan for a responsible adult to drive you home and possibly stay with you afterward.
Follow the specific instructions you receive. Some types of sedation require fasting for a period beforehand. Ask the office if you are unsure.
Usually, yes. Sedation helps with relaxation, while local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated. Both are often used together.
Nitrous oxide can take the edge off dental nerves for some patients. Jarvis patients can learn how it feels, who it may suit and what the team needs to know beforehand.
If dental visits make you tense, you are not alone. Jarvis patients can talk with our Port Dover team about pacing, signals and comfort options before any treatment.
