Comfort with careful planning

Sedation can make treatment easier, but it isn’t right for everyone.

Dental sedation uses medication to help you feel relaxed during treatment. Depending on the type, you may feel calm and drowsy but still able to respond, or more deeply relaxed. Sedation is sometimes used for significant anxiety, longer procedures, a strong gag reflex or particular medical or developmental needs. It always works alongside local anaesthetic, which numbs the area being treated.

Hagersville patients can discuss sedation at our Port Dover office. Because some forms require an escort and a recovery period, planning the trip, the person driving you and the rest of your day is part of the conversation.

Types of sedation

Different levels of sedation suit different needs.

Inhaled sedation

Nitrous oxide, breathed through a nose mask, produces light relaxation that wears off quickly once the gas is stopped. You remain awake and able to communicate. It is often a first choice for mild to moderate anxiety. Its quick recovery makes it convenient, though suitability depends on your health and ability to breathe through the nose.

Oral and other forms

Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment to help you feel calm and drowsy. Effects last longer, so you need someone to accompany you and drive you home. Deeper forms of sedation or general anaesthesia may require referral to a specialist setting. The dentist will explain which options are available and appropriate.

Is it suitable?

A careful health review comes first.

  • Health review

Before recommending sedation, the dentist reviews your medical history, medications, allergies and any previous reactions to sedatives or anaesthesia. Conditions such as sleep apnea, heart or lung disease, pregnancy and liver or kidney problems can affect safety. Be completely honest about alcohol, recreational drugs and supplements, as these can interact with sedatives.

  • Situations needing extra caution

Some people are better suited to sedation in a hospital or specialist clinic, where deeper sedation and additional monitoring are available. If that is the case, the dentist will explain why and help with a referral. The goal is to match the sedation approach to your needs and safety, not to use one approach for everyone.

Preparing

Preparation instructions are important to follow.

  1. Following instructions

You may be given specific instructions about eating and drinking before your appointment, when to take any prescribed sedative and which regular medications to take or skip. Follow them carefully. Wear comfortable clothing and remove contact lenses and nail polish if asked. Call the office if you are unwell on the day, as plans may need to change.

  2. Arranging an escort

For oral or deeper sedation, a responsible adult must accompany you, drive you home and ideally stay with you for some hours afterwards. Because the drive back to Hagersville is not short, make sure your escort can wait at the office or return promptly. Do not plan to drive, operate machinery or make important decisions that day.

Recovery

Rest and supervision help you recover safely.

The first hours

After sedation, you may feel drowsy, unsteady or have little memory of the appointment. Rest at home with your escort nearby. Eat light foods once numbness has worn off and drink fluids. Avoid alcohol and any medications not approved by the dentist. Most people feel back to normal by the next day, though this varies.

When to call

Contact the office if you have persistent nausea, vomiting, unusual drowsiness, or pain that is not controlled with recommended relief. Seek emergency medical care for difficulty breathing, chest pain, or if you cannot be woken easily. Follow any specific post-treatment instructions related to the dental work performed during the visit.

Sedation questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be unconscious?

Not with most forms of dental sedation offered in a dental office. You are relaxed and drowsy but can usually respond. Deeper sedation or general anaesthesia is a different service and may require referral to a specialist setting.

Can I drive myself home?

After nitrous oxide alone, many adults can drive once cleared by the dentist. After oral or deeper sedation, you must not drive and need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you.

Is sedation safe?

When planned carefully with a full health review and appropriate monitoring, sedation is generally safe for suitable patients. Risks vary by type and health status. The dentist will discuss them and why a particular approach is recommended.

Will I remember the treatment?

With nitrous oxide, you usually remember most of it. With oral sedation, memory of the appointment may be patchy or absent. Everyone responds differently, and the dentist can explain what to expect.

Does sedation replace freezing?

No. Sedation helps you relax, while local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated. Both are usually used together so you feel calm and the tooth stays comfortable throughout the procedure.
