Dental sedation uses medication to help patients feel more relaxed during treatment. Depending on the type and level, you may feel drowsy, calm or less aware of the procedure, while still being able to breathe on your own. Sedation does not replace local anaesthetic, which is still used to numb the area being treated.
Glen Meyer patients who feel very anxious, have a strong gag reflex or need longer treatment can ask whether sedation might help. At our Port Dover office, the dentist will review your health, medications and the planned procedure before discussing whether any sedation option is appropriate.

Is it right for you
Sedation may be considered for people with significant dental anxiety, past traumatic dental experiences, difficulty getting numb, a strong gag reflex or a need for longer or more complex treatment. It can also help some people with special needs. The dentist will explain whether sedation is likely to help in your situation, and whether other approaches might work first.
Your medical history, medications, breathing, weight, sleep apnea and other health conditions all influence whether sedation is safe and which type may be suitable. Pregnancy and some chronic illnesses require special consideration. Be thorough and honest when sharing your history, because it allows the dentist to plan carefully or recommend a referral if more specialised care is needed.
Types of sedation
Lighter options, such as nitrous oxide or oral medication taken before treatment, can help you feel calmer while remaining awake and able to respond. The effects and recovery time vary between methods. The dentist will explain how each option works, what you might feel and what preparation is involved, so you can decide what suits you.
For some patients or procedures, deeper sedation or general anaesthesia may be recommended. These are usually provided in specialised settings with additional monitoring and staff, and may involve referral to another provider. The dentist can explain whether referral is advisable and what the process would involve, including any medical assessments or wait times you should expect beforehand.
Preparing for it
You may be given instructions about eating and drinking before your appointment, as well as when to take or hold certain medications. Follow these instructions closely, and ask questions if anything is unclear. Wear comfortable clothing, avoid alcohol beforehand and let the team know if you feel unwell or have a cold on the day.
With many forms of sedation, you will not be able to drive or operate machinery for a period afterward. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and, in some cases, stay with you for a while. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day, especially if you are travelling back to Glen Meyer.
During and after
During sedation, the team monitors your breathing, oxygen levels and other signs as appropriate for the type used. Local anaesthetic is still given to numb the treatment area. You may feel relaxed, sleepy or less aware of time passing. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, let the team know so they can respond and adjust what they are doing.
After treatment, you will be observed until you are ready to leave. You may feel drowsy, unsteady or forgetful for some time. Follow the aftercare instructions you receive about eating, medications and activity. Contact the office or seek medical care if you have unusual symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting or confusion that does not clear.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to ask whether sedation may be suitable for your treatment. Mention your level of anxiety, medical conditions, medications and any past experiences with sedation, good or bad.
Ask about pre-appointment eating and medication instructions, and arrange a ride home in advance if sedation is planned for your visit.
Before you book

It depends on the type of sedation. Many dental sedation options keep you awake but relaxed, while deeper sedation or general anaesthesia may make you unaware of the procedure. The dentist will explain what to expect with the option recommended for you.
Sedation is commonly used in dentistry, but it carries risks that depend on your health and the type used. A careful review of your medical history and proper monitoring help reduce those risks. Ask the dentist any questions you have about safety.
With many types of sedation, you should not drive for a period afterward. Arrange for a responsible adult to take you home. The dentist will give specific advice based on the type of sedation and how you respond.
No. Sedation helps you relax, while local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated. The two are often used together to keep you comfortable and calm during the procedure, and the dentist will check that you are numb before starting.
Some children may be candidates for certain types of sedation, depending on their age, health and treatment needs. Deeper sedation is usually provided in specialised settings. The dentist will discuss options with parents before any decision is made.
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, can take the edge off dental anxiety. Glen Meyer patients can learn how it feels, who it may suit and what to expect.
Dental fear is common and can be planned around. Glen Meyer patients can share triggers, agree on signals and ask about comfort options before a visit.
