Plan the method before planning the treatment day

Sedation is an assessed part of care, not a standard addition to every visit.

If anxiety or difficulty tolerating dental treatment is affecting attendance, ask about the options appropriate to your circumstances. Sedation approaches differ in their effects, requirements and suitable care settings. A conversation should establish what is actually proposed rather than rely on a broad promise of sleeping through treatment.

Delhi patients can discuss comfort needs at our Port Dover practice. Tell the team about the procedure being considered and your concerns so assessment, available arrangements and any referral needs can be reviewed.

Review your health and experience

Discuss sedation in the context of your health and previous care experiences.

  • Share conditions, medicines and earlier responses

Share medical conditions, medicines, allergies and previous responses to sedation or anaesthesia. Mention sleep-apnea treatment, breathing concerns and any relevant changes in health. The appropriate plan depends on you as well as the dental procedure.

  • Explain what makes dental care difficult

Describe the parts of earlier visits that were difficult and the explanations or support that helped. These details matter even when medication is being considered. A sedation discussion should include how the team will communicate with you and which approach is appropriate after assessment, rather than assuming the same method suits every worried patient.

Understand the proposed level and setting

Know which sedation method is proposed and where it can appropriately be provided.

Identify the intended level, provider and monitoring

Have the clinician identify the technique, expected responsiveness and monitoring arrangements. Minimal sedation, deeper sedation and general anaesthesia are different forms of care. Ask which option can appropriately be provided at the office and whether another setting or provider is recommended.

Clarify how local anaesthetic fits the comfort plan

Ask how pain control for the dental procedure will be provided alongside sedation. Local anaesthetic may still be needed because numbing the treated area and helping you tolerate care have different roles. Understanding both parts avoids using the general word sedation as a promise about every sensation during the appointment.

Follow individual preparation instructions

Prepare from the instructions attached to the agreed method of care.

  1. Confirm requirements for the agreed method

Obtain the eating, drinking, medication and accompaniment instructions for the method actually agreed. Confirm them early enough to arrange support and travel from Delhi. Requirements can differ from a friend's procedure or your own earlier appointment, so check any uncertainty with the treating team instead of combining advice from different experiences.

  2. Disclose substances and report health changes

Do not self-medicate with alcohol, cannabis, extra sedatives or someone else’s prescription to prepare. Tell the team about everything taken and report illness or a change in health before attendance. Preparation concerns may require the plan to be reconsidered.

Plan discharge and continuing care

Take both the recovery instructions and the dental aftercare plan home.

Arrange return travel and supervision as instructed

Clarify whether an escort, driving restriction or supervision is required and for how long. Leave only after the treating team has assessed recovery and provided instructions. Feeling alert is not a substitute for following the directions attached to your care.

Keep procedure aftercare alongside sedation guidance

Keep instructions for the treated tooth or tissues alongside the sedation discharge advice, and share them with anyone helping you recover. Confirm which symptoms require contact, which team handles questions and whether treatment remains unfinished. Recovery from sedation and completion of the dental procedure are separate parts of the follow-up plan.

Planning your appointment

Discuss sedation before booking treatment from Delhi.

Contact our Port Dover office with your comfort concerns and health information. Ask what assessment is required before a suitable method, provider and treatment date can be confirmed.

Arrange transport only after the instructions are clear. Confirm consent, estimated fees and the planned procedure so the appointment reflects an agreed care plan.

Questions before a sedation discussion

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does sedation always mean I will be asleep?

No. Different levels have different intended effects and responsiveness. Ask the clinician to identify the method being proposed and explain what to expect. Do not treat the general word sedation as a description of one universal experience.

Can I request a specific method without an assessment?

You can discuss your preference, but suitability depends on health, medicines, the procedure and the available care setting. The clinician needs to assess those factors and explain appropriate options, including referral where needed.

Will I still need freezing for the tooth?

Local anaesthetic and sedation serve different purposes. A procedure may still need numbing even when a relaxation method is used. Ask how pain control and anxiety support are being planned together for the treatment.

Can I drive home if I feel normal afterwards?

Follow the discharge and driving instructions for the method and medicines used. Do not decide solely by how alert you feel. Confirm escort and transport requirements before the appointment so the return journey is arranged appropriately.

What if I become unwell before the appointment?

Contact the practice and describe the illness or health change before travelling. The team can decide whether the planned care remains appropriate. Be clear about any new medicine or substance use rather than trying to proceed with an outdated preparation plan.
