For some people, dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still or a long procedure make treatment hard to manage. Sedation uses medication to help you feel more relaxed during care. Options range from mild, where you stay fully awake, to deeper levels that require specialised settings. The right choice depends on your health, needs and the treatment planned.
If you are from Boston and wondering whether sedation could help, raise it with our Port Dover office well before your appointment. The dentist will review your medical history and the treatment involved, then explain which options may be appropriate and what preparation each one requires on the day.

Who it helps
People with significant dental anxiety sometimes avoid care until problems become severe and painful. Sedation can help them receive treatment more comfortably and break that cycle. A strong gag reflex, sensitivity to sounds or difficulty keeping the mouth open for long periods can also be good reasons to discuss sedation with the dentist before treatment begins.
Lengthy appointments, several procedures in one visit or more involved treatments, such as some extractions, may be easier to get through with sedation. The dentist will consider whether the benefits outweigh any risks in your case, and whether other comfort measures, such as breaks or shorter visits, might work just as well without any medication.
Types
Nitrous oxide, breathed through a small nose mask, provides mild relaxation and wears off quickly once it is stopped. Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before the appointment and usually requires someone to drive you home. Both allow you to remain awake and responsive, though you may feel drowsy or remember less of the visit afterward.
Deeper levels of sedation and general anaesthesia require specialised training, equipment and monitoring, and may be provided by a specialist or in a hospital setting rather than a general office. If these are being considered for you, the dentist will explain whether a referral is needed, why, and what the process and waiting time would involve.
Safety
Tell the dentist about all medical conditions, medications, supplements, allergies, breathing problems such as sleep apnea, pregnancy and any past reactions to sedation or anaesthesia. Some conditions or medications affect which options are safe for you. The dentist may need to consult your physician before recommending sedation, which can add a little time to planning.
Follow all instructions about eating, drinking and taking regular medications before the appointment. If oral or deeper sedation is used, arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a while afterward. Do not drive, operate machinery or make important decisions until the effects have fully worn off, usually later that day.
Afterward
Recovery time depends on the type of sedation used. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, while oral sedation may leave you drowsy for several hours. Rest at home, drink fluids and follow any aftercare instructions for the dental treatment itself, such as care of a filling or extraction site. Contact the office if you have unusual symptoms or concerns.
Let the team know how the sedation worked for you, including anything you found unpleasant. If it helped, it may be planned again for future visits. Over time, some people find their anxiety decreases as they have more positive experiences in the chair, and they may eventually need less sedation or none at all for routine care.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to ask about sedation for an upcoming treatment. The team can explain what information the dentist needs and how a sedation appointment is planned and prepared for.
If sedation is recommended, arrange in advance for someone to drive you home to Boston and stay with you afterward.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
With lighter forms like nitrous oxide or oral sedation, you usually remain awake but relaxed and able to respond. Deeper sedation or general anaesthesia may make you unaware, but these require specialised settings, monitoring and careful planning in advance.
After nitrous oxide, many people can drive after a short recovery period at the office. After oral or deeper sedation, you should not drive at all that day. Arrange for a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you.
Sedation is commonly used in dentistry when it is appropriate for the patient. Safety depends on a careful health review, correct dosing and monitoring during treatment. The dentist will assess whether it suits your health before recommending any option.
Usually, yes. Most sedation helps you relax but does not numb the area being treated. Local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that need it, and many people find the injection much easier to cope with once they feel calm.
The dentist can discuss other ways to make treatment manageable, such as breaks, shorter visits, distraction techniques or a referral to a setting that offers different options. There is usually more than one way to make care feel possible.
Nitrous oxide can help some patients feel calmer and wears off quickly. Boston patients can ask our Port Dover team if it suits their health and treatment.
Nervous about the dentist? Boston patients can tell our Port Dover team what makes visits hard and plan pacing, breaks and comfort options first.
