Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsAnother perspective
A second opinion is a reasonable step when a treatment plan is extensive, expensive or surprising, or when you simply want to understand your options better. It is not a criticism of another dentist. Two clinicians may see the same tooth differently, and hearing another explanation can help you feel more confident in your decision.
If you live in Jarvis and have received a recommendation you would like reviewed, our Port Dover office can offer an independent assessment. Bring your records, and we will give you our honest view.

When to seek one
Large treatment plans involving multiple crowns, implants or extractions, recommendations that came as a surprise, unresolved pain after treatment or feeling rushed to decide are common reasons. You might also want a second opinion when options seem limited or you were not offered alternatives you have read about.
If you have severe pain, swelling or signs of infection, do not wait for a second opinion before getting urgent care. Treating an acute problem comes first. Once you are comfortable, you can then seek another perspective on longer-term treatment options if needed.
Preparing
Request copies of recent X-rays, the written treatment plan and any notes from your previous dentist. You have the right to request your records. Recent X-rays can help avoid repeating images unnecessarily. Bring a list of medications and relevant health information as well.
Write down what was recommended, what you were told about why, and what concerns or questions you have. Note anything you did not understand. Clear questions help the dentist focus on what matters most to you and ensure you leave with the answers you were looking for.
The consultation
The dentist reviews your records and examines the relevant teeth and surrounding areas. Additional X-rays or tests may be suggested if needed. The goal is to understand the problem independently rather than simply agreeing or disagreeing with the original plan.
You will hear the dentist’s assessment, including where they agree with the original recommendation and where they might suggest something different. Ask about alternatives, the reasons behind each suggestion and what would happen if treatment were delayed. The aim is clarity, not pressure.
Deciding
If both opinions agree, you can proceed with more confidence. If they differ, ask each dentist to explain their reasoning. Sometimes the difference is about timing or preference rather than right and wrong. Understanding the reasons helps you choose an approach you are comfortable with.
You can choose to have treatment with your original dentist, at our office or elsewhere. There is no obligation. If you are still uncertain, a specialist opinion may sometimes be helpful. The dentist can explain when a referral might add value.
