Back teeth have deep grooves on their chewing surfaces where food and bacteria can hide, even with careful brushing. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted into those grooves to help keep decay out. Fluoride varnish strengthens enamel across all teeth and can help reverse very early weak spots. Together, they are among the simplest ways to protect children’s teeth.
Walsingham families can ask about sealants and fluoride at their child’s checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at your child’s teeth and cavity risk and explain whether these treatments are recommended, which teeth would benefit and how often fluoride might be applied.

Sealants
A sealant is a liquid resin that flows into the pits and fissures of back teeth and hardens into a smooth shield. This makes the surface easier to clean and harder for bacteria to settle into. Sealants are most effective on teeth without existing decay or fillings in the grooves.
Permanent molars are often sealed soon after they come in, typically around ages six and twelve. Premolars and some baby molars with deep grooves may also be sealed. The dentist will check each tooth and recommend sealants only where they are likely to provide meaningful protection.
Fluoride
Fluoride varnish is a sticky coating painted onto teeth. It releases fluoride over several hours, helping strengthen enamel and repair early demineralization. It is quick, painless and suitable for young children. Applying it at regular dental visits adds to the protection provided by fluoride toothpaste at home.
Children with a history of cavities, braces, deep grooves, limited brushing or frequent sugary snacks often benefit most. The dentist considers your child’s risk to decide how often fluoride should be applied. If your home water supply comes from a private well, mention it, since fluoride levels in well water vary.
The visit
For sealants, the tooth is cleaned and dried, a gentle solution is applied to help the sealant stick, then rinsed off. The liquid sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a curing light. No freezing or drilling is usually needed. Each tooth takes only a few minutes.
Fluoride varnish is brushed onto the teeth with a small brush. It sets quickly when it contacts saliva. Your child may notice a slight taste or a temporary yellowish film. You will be given instructions about eating, drinking and brushing for the rest of the day.
Afterwards
After fluoride varnish, your child should usually avoid hot drinks, sticky foods and brushing for a few hours, following the instructions given. This lets the fluoride work longer on the teeth. Continue brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste in the amount recommended for your child’s age.
Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip. The dentist checks them at regular visits and can repair or replace them if needed. Sealants do not replace brushing, flossing or a healthy diet. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks between meals remains important for cavity prevention.
Planning your appointment

Bring a list of your child’s medications and allergies, and let the team know about any past cavities or dental concerns.

No. Placing sealants does not usually require freezing or drilling. The process involves cleaning, painting and hardening the material on the tooth surface.
Sealants can last several years with normal chewing. The dentist checks them at each visit and can repair or reapply them if they wear or chip.
Yes. Fluoride varnish is applied in very small amounts and sets quickly, making it suitable for young children. The dentist will recommend it based on your child’s risk.
Sometimes. Adults with deep grooves and no decay or fillings in those areas may benefit. The dentist will advise whether sealants make sense for adult teeth.
