Back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria collect, and toothbrush bristles cannot always reach. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted into these grooves to keep out decay. Fluoride varnish strengthens enamel and helps reverse very early cavities. Together, they are some of the most effective preventive tools for children.
Walsh families can ask about sealants and fluoride at their child’s checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist will assess which teeth would benefit, explain how each treatment works and how often it should be repeated, based on your child’s risk, age and habits.

Sealants
Sealants are most often placed on permanent molars soon after they come through, typically around ages six and twelve, when the deep grooves are most vulnerable. They may also be recommended for premolars or for baby molars with especially deep grooves. The dentist will check each tooth individually to see whether sealing it is worthwhile for your child.
A sealant flows into the deep pits and fissures and hardens, creating a smoother surface that is easier to clean and harder for bacteria to settle into. It does not replace brushing, but it adds a barrier exactly where decay most commonly starts in children’s teeth. Sealants are usually clear, white or tooth-coloured, so they are barely noticeable.
Fluoride
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth and sets quickly on contact with saliva. It helps strengthen enamel, makes teeth more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria and can help remineralize early weak spots before they become cavities. It is quick, painless and suitable for children of many ages, including toddlers with only a few teeth.
Children with past cavities, deep grooves, braces, frequent snacking or limited fluoride from their drinking water may benefit most. Rural homes on private wells, which are common in farm country, may have quite different fluoride levels from municipal water, so mention your water source to the dentist when fluoride is being discussed for your child.
Application
The tooth is cleaned and dried, a gentle conditioning solution is applied, then rinsed and dried again. The sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a blue curing light. No freezing or drilling is usually needed for sealants on healthy teeth. Each tooth takes only a few minutes, and most children find the process easy.
Fluoride varnish is brushed onto the teeth after cleaning and may feel slightly sticky. Your child may be asked to avoid hot drinks, hard or sticky foods and brushing for a few hours afterward so the varnish has time to work on the enamel. The team will give you specific instructions to follow on the way home.
Maintenance
Sealants can last several years but may chip or wear down with chewing. The dentist checks them at regular visits and can repair or replace them if needed, usually quickly. Encourage children not to chew ice, hard candy or pens, which can damage sealants, and let the office know if your child says something feels rough.
Fluoride varnish may be repeated at regular visits based on your child’s cavity risk. At home, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, using the amount recommended for your child’s age. Keep checkups from Walsh on schedule so the protection stays current as new adult teeth come in and need sealing of their own over the years.

Sealants are often placed on permanent molars soon after they erupt, around ages six and twelve. The dentist may also suggest them for other teeth with deep grooves, depending on your child’s risk of cavities.
No. Placing sealants usually requires no freezing or drilling. The tooth is cleaned, prepared and the sealant painted on and hardened with a light. Most children find it quick and easy, and some even enjoy it.
Fluoride varnish is widely used for children and applied in very small amounts. The dentist will recommend it based on age and cavity risk and explain any precautions to follow after the appointment at home.
Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip over time. The dentist checks them at regular visits and can touch them up or replace them when needed, keeping the protection in place as your child grows.
Private wells vary widely in their natural fluoride levels, from very little to quite a lot. Mention your water source to the dentist, who can consider it when recommending fluoride treatments or toothpaste for your child.
