The chewing surfaces of back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria can hide, making them a common place for cavities to start in children. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted into those grooves. Fluoride treatments strengthen enamel and help early weak spots recover. Both are quick, comfortable and can be part of a routine visit.
Families from Vittoria can ask about sealants and fluoride at our Port Dover office during a child’s checkup. The dentist will look at your child’s teeth, decay risk and age, and explain whether these treatments would be helpful and how they fit alongside brushing, diet and regular visits.

Sealants explained
Even with careful brushing, bristles may not reach the bottom of deep grooves in molars. A sealant fills these grooves, creating a smoother surface that is easier to clean and harder for bacteria to settle into. Sealants do not replace brushing or flossing, but they can significantly reduce the chance of cavities on chewing surfaces.
Sealants are often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, typically around ages six and twelve. Some baby molars or premolars with deep grooves may also benefit. The dentist will check whether the grooves are deep and free of decay before recommending sealants, and explain which teeth are suitable. Timing soon after eruption helps.
Fluoride explained
Fluoride is a mineral that makes enamel more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria. It can also help remineralize early areas of weakness before they become cavities. Children at higher risk of decay often benefit from additional fluoride beyond what is in toothpaste. The dentist will explain your child’s risk and the recommendation. Ask questions freely.
Fluoride toothpaste is part of daily care. Professional fluoride varnish or gel is applied in the office and contains a higher concentration. It is usually painted on teeth and sets quickly. The dentist will recommend how often professional fluoride may help and the appropriate amount of toothpaste for your child’s age. Spitting, not rinsing, keeps fluoride working.
The appointment
The tooth is cleaned and dried, and a mild solution is applied to help the sealant bond. After rinsing and drying again, the sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a curing light. There is no drilling or freezing for standard sealants. The dentist checks the bite and makes sure the sealant is smooth.
Fluoride varnish is painted onto teeth with a small brush. It may feel slightly sticky and have a flavour. Your child may be asked to avoid eating hard foods or brushing for a short period afterward so the fluoride can work. The team will give specific instructions after the application. Most children find it quick and easy.
Keeping teeth protected
Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip. The dentist will check them at regular visits and repair or replace them if needed. Let the office know if your child says a sealant feels rough or has come off. Repairs are usually quick and simple. Sealants protect only the grooves, so the sides of teeth still need careful brushing and flossing.
Help your child brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth. Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals. Regular checkups help monitor teeth and decide whether fluoride or sealants should be reapplied as your child grows. Offering water rather than juice between meals is one of the simplest changes a family can make. Small, steady habits protect teeth best over time.
Planning your appointment
Ask our Port Dover office about sealants and fluoride when booking your child’s checkup. The dentist can assess whether these treatments would help and whether they can be done during the same visit.
Bring your child’s health information and let the team know about any allergies or past reactions to dental products. Note which back teeth have recently come in.

Sealants are widely used to help prevent cavities. If you have concerns about the materials, ask the dentist for more information. They can explain what is used and why sealants are recommended for your child.
Sealants can last several years with normal wear. The dentist will check them at checkups and repair or replace them if they chip or wear down. Good brushing habits help them stay effective. Chewing ice or hard candy may wear them faster.
Toothpaste is an important part of daily care, but children at higher risk of decay may benefit from additional professional fluoride. The dentist will assess your child’s risk and recommend what is appropriate. Needs may change as they grow.
Sometimes. Adults with deep grooves and no decay may benefit. The dentist can assess whether sealants are suitable for adult teeth based on their condition and risk factors. Ask about them at your own checkup if you have deep grooves.
Varnish usually comes in mild flavours. Some children find the texture slightly sticky. The application is quick, and the team can offer a choice of flavours where available. The coating wears off after the next brushing.
Regular children’s dental exams track growth, catch decay early and build confidence. See what Vittoria parents can expect at a checkup in our Port Dover office.
