Children’s back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria collect, and brushing alone may not reach them well. Sealants are thin coatings painted into those grooves to keep debris out. Fluoride treatments strengthen enamel and help it resist acid attacks. Used together with good brushing and a sensible diet, they can reduce the risk of cavities significantly.
Families in Vanessa can ask about sealants and fluoride during their child’s checkups at our Port Dover office. The dentist or hygienist will look at your child’s teeth, cavity risk and history, and explain whether either treatment would be helpful and when it is best applied.

Sealants explained
A sealant is a thin plastic coating that flows into the pits and grooves of back teeth and hardens. It creates a smooth surface that is easier to clean and harder for food and bacteria to stick to. Sealants do not replace brushing, but they add protection in the spots where many children’s cavities start. They are painless to apply.
Sealants are commonly placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, typically around ages six and twelve, when the teeth are most vulnerable. Some baby molars or premolars with deep grooves may also benefit. The dentist checks that teeth are free of decay before sealing, and will recommend which teeth would benefit most from protection.
Fluoride explained
Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen enamel and can reverse very early signs of decay. Children get fluoride from toothpaste and, in some areas, drinking water. Many rural homes rely on well water, which may contain little fluoride. Professional fluoride varnish applied at the dental office provides an extra boost, especially for children at higher risk.
Children with past cavities, frequent snacking, braces, special health needs or limited fluoride exposure may benefit most from professional fluoride. The hygienist can explain your child’s risk and recommend how often varnish should be applied. They will also advise on the right amount of fluoride toothpaste for your child’s age, since swallowing too much is not recommended.
The appointment
To place a sealant, the tooth is cleaned and dried, and a gentle solution is applied to help the sealant bond. The sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a special light. No freezing or drilling is needed. The process takes only a few minutes per tooth, and your child can eat and drink normally afterward.
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth with a small brush after a cleaning. It sets quickly when it contacts saliva. Your child may be asked to avoid hard or sticky foods and hot drinks for a few hours and to skip brushing until later that day, so the varnish has time to work. The team will give you instructions.
Ongoing protection
Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip over time. At each checkup, the dentist checks that sealants are intact and still covering the grooves. Worn or missing areas can often be repaired or resealed. Fluoride varnish is reapplied at intervals recommended by the team based on your child’s risk and history of decay.
Help your child brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss where teeth touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals, and encourage water. If you use well water, ask the dentist whether fluoride supplements or more frequent varnish would be appropriate. Regular checkups help catch problems early, while they are still small and simple to fix.
Planning your appointment
Ask about sealants and fluoride at your child’s next checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist or hygienist will explain whether your child would benefit and can often apply treatment at the same visit.
Let the team know if your home uses well water, and mention any past cavities or special health needs your child has.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sealants are painted onto the tooth surface without drilling or freezing. The process is quick and comfortable, and most children tolerate it very well. Your child may notice a slightly different feeling on the tooth at first.
Sealants often last several years but can wear or chip with chewing. The dentist checks them at regular visits and can repair or replace them if needed, keeping protection in place on the back teeth.
Fluoride used in appropriate amounts is considered safe and effective for preventing cavities. Use the recommended amount of toothpaste for your child’s age, and follow the dentist’s advice about how often professional applications are worthwhile for your child.
Well water often has little natural fluoride. The dentist may recommend professional fluoride varnish more often or discuss supplements. Let the team know about your water source so they can advise appropriately. A water test can show the fluoride level.
Yes. Adults with deep grooves or a high risk of decay may benefit from sealants, and professional fluoride can help adults with sensitivity, dry mouth or frequent cavities. Ask the dentist whether they suit you.
