Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office

Back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria easily hide, and young enamel is especially vulnerable to decay. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted into those grooves, while fluoride strengthens enamel and helps repair very early damage. Both are quick, painless and commonly recommended for children at risk of cavities.
Turkey Point families can ask about sealants and fluoride during their child’s checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist will consider your child’s age, tooth development and cavity risk before recommending either.

How they work
A sealant flows into the pits and grooves on chewing surfaces and hardens to form a smooth barrier. This makes it harder for food and bacteria to settle in areas that toothbrush bristles struggle to reach. Sealants are most often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, when the grooves are most vulnerable.
Fluoride helps rebuild minerals in enamel and makes teeth more resistant to acid attacks. Professional fluoride is applied as a varnish or gel that stays on the teeth for a short time. It complements fluoride toothpaste used at home and can be especially helpful for children with a history of cavities.
Who benefits
Children who have had cavities, eat or drink sugary foods often, have deep grooves, wear orthodontic appliances or have difficulty brushing thoroughly may benefit most. The dentist reviews diet, brushing habits and dental history to decide whether sealants, fluoride or both make sense for your child.
Sealants are typically applied once permanent molars have fully erupted, often around six years of age for first molars and around twelve for second molars, though timing varies. Fluoride may be applied at regular checkups. The dentist will explain the recommended schedule for your child.
The appointment
The tooth is cleaned and dried, and a mild solution is applied to help the sealant bond. After rinsing and drying again, the sealant is painted onto the grooves and hardened with a special light. The process takes a few minutes per tooth. Children only need to keep their mouth open and stay still briefly.
Fluoride varnish is brushed onto the teeth and sets quickly. It may feel slightly sticky. Your child may be asked to avoid eating hard foods or brushing for a few hours afterward so the fluoride has time to work. The hygienist will give specific instructions.
Keeping teeth protected
Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip. The dentist checks them at each visit and can repair or replace them if needed. Avoid chewing ice or hard candy, which can damage sealants. Let the office know if your child reports a rough spot on a sealed tooth.
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially sipping juice or sports drinks throughout long summer days. Water is the best choice between meals. Regular checkups help ensure your child’s teeth stay healthy and protected.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to ask about sealants or fluoride during your child’s next exam. Let the team know about any history of cavities or concerns about brushing.
If your child recently had sealants placed elsewhere, bring records so the dentist can check them and avoid duplicating treatment.
