The chewing surfaces of back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria collect, making them prone to decay. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted into those grooves to keep debris out. Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps repair early damage. Together, they complement brushing and healthy eating habits in protecting children’s teeth.
Parents from Townsend can ask about sealants and fluoride for their children during checkups at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at which teeth may benefit, consider your child’s cavity risk and explain how these treatments are applied and how long they tend to last.

How sealants work
A sealant flows into the pits and fissures on a tooth’s chewing surface and hardens into a smooth, thin shield. That makes the surface far easier to keep clean and much harder for bacteria to settle into. Sealants are usually clear, white or tooth-coloured, so they are not noticeable when your child smiles, and most children cannot feel them once they are in place.
Permanent back molars are often sealed soon after they come through, typically around ages six and twelve, when the grooves are deepest and brushing is least thorough. Some baby molars or premolars with particularly deep grooves may also benefit. The dentist will make sure each tooth is free of decay before sealing it, since sealants are meant for healthy surfaces.
How fluoride helps
Fluoride helps rebuild enamel that has been weakened by acids and makes it more resistant to future attacks from bacteria and sugary foods. In its earliest stages, decay that shows as a chalky white spot can sometimes be reversed with fluoride before a true cavity forms. Brushing every day with fluoride toothpaste is the foundation of this protection for most children.
Professional fluoride, often painted on as a varnish, delivers a more concentrated dose that stays on the teeth for several hours. It may be suggested for children with a higher risk of cavities, such as those with deep grooves, braces or frequent snacking. The dentist will explain whether your child would benefit and how often an application might be repeated.
The appointment
For a sealant, the tooth is cleaned and dried, then a mild solution is applied to help the material bond. After rinsing and drying again, the sealant is brushed into the grooves and hardened with a small blue curing light. It takes only a few minutes per tooth and needs no numbing, which makes it one of the easier treatments for young children.
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth with a small brush and sets almost as soon as it touches saliva. It may feel slightly sticky at first. Your child may be asked to avoid hard or crunchy foods, hot drinks and brushing for a few hours afterwards, so the fluoride has time to soak into the enamel before it is brushed away.
Ongoing protection
Sealants can last several years, but chewing gradually wears them and they can occasionally chip or lift at the edges. The dentist checks them at each regular visit and can top up or replace them if needed. If your child mentions a rough spot on a back tooth or a piece seems to be missing, mention it at the next appointment.
Sealants protect only the chewing surfaces, not the sides of teeth or the areas where teeth touch, so brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth remain essential. Keeping sweet snacks and drinks to mealtimes helps too. Regular checkups allow any early problems to be caught while they are still small and simple to manage.
Planning your appointment

Sealants are often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, typically around ages six and twelve. Some children benefit from sealants on other teeth with deep grooves. The dentist will recommend timing based on your child’s teeth and risk of decay.
No. Applying sealants is painless and does not require numbing. The tooth is cleaned, prepared and painted with the sealant, which is then hardened with a light. Most children find the process quick and easy, and many barely notice it.
Fluoride varnish is widely used and applied in very small amounts. The dentist considers your child’s age, cavity risk and other fluoride sources, such as toothpaste, before recommending it. Feel free to ask any questions you have about its use.
Sealants can last for several years, though they wear gradually and may chip. The dentist checks them during regular visits and can repair or reapply them when needed, so the grooves stay protected through the years when cavities are most common.
No. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces but not the sides of teeth or the spaces between them. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth and healthy eating habits are still essential for preventing cavities.
