The chewing surfaces of back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria easily collect, and toothbrush bristles cannot always reach the bottom of them. Sealants fill and cover these grooves with a thin protective coating. Fluoride strengthens enamel and can help reverse very early signs of decay. Together, they are among the most effective preventive tools for children.
Langton families can ask about sealants and fluoride during their children’s checkups at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at your child’s teeth and cavity risk and explain whether either treatment is recommended, how long it lasts and how it fits with brushing, flossing and diet at home.

How sealants work
A sealant is a liquid resin that flows into the pits and fissures of a tooth and hardens to form a smooth surface. With the grooves sealed, it is harder for plaque to settle and easier to brush the tooth clean. Sealants are tooth-coloured or clear and are not usually noticeable when your child talks or smiles.
Permanent molars, which usually arrive around ages six and twelve, are the most common teeth to be sealed. Sealing them soon after they erupt offers protection during the years when cavities are most likely. Some baby teeth with deep grooves and some adults at high risk of decay may also benefit. The dentist will advise.
Fluoride benefits
Fluoride helps rebuild minerals in enamel that have been lost to acid attacks and makes the surface more resistant to future decay. Professional fluoride varnish is painted on the teeth during a dental visit and sets quickly. It provides a concentrated dose that complements the fluoride your child receives from toothpaste and, in some communities, drinking water.
Children with a history of cavities, frequent snacking, braces, special health care needs or limited access to fluoridated water may benefit from professional fluoride. Families who rely on well water, as many rural households do, may want to ask whether their water contains fluoride. The dentist can discuss your child’s risk and the recommended frequency.
The appointment
The tooth is cleaned and dried, and a mild solution is applied to help the sealant bond. After rinsing and drying again, the sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a curing light. No needles or drilling are needed. Each tooth takes only a few minutes, and your child can eat normally right away.
Fluoride varnish is brushed onto the teeth and sets on contact with saliva. It may feel slightly sticky or look a little yellow at first. Your child should avoid hot drinks, hard or crunchy foods and brushing for the period the team recommends, usually several hours, so the varnish can work effectively on the enamel.
Maintenance
Sealants can last several years but may wear down or chip over time. The dentist checks them at each visit and can repair or replace them if needed. Let the office know if your child says a sealant feels rough or has come off. Fluoride varnish is reapplied at intervals the dentist recommends based on risk.
Brushing twice daily with an age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste, flossing where teeth touch and limiting sugary drinks and snacks remain essential. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces but not the spaces between teeth, where cavities also form. Regular checkups help catch any decay early and keep all your child’s teeth healthy and strong as they grow.
Planning your appointment
Mention sealants and fluoride when booking your child’s checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist will assess your child’s teeth and cavity risk and explain whether either treatment is a good fit.
If your household uses well water, let the team know, as it may affect how much fluoride your child is getting.

Sealants are often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, around ages six and twelve. Some children benefit from sealants on baby molars or other teeth with deep grooves. The dentist will recommend timing based on your child’s teeth.
Dental sealants have been used for many years and are considered safe and effective for preventing cavities on chewing surfaces. If you have questions about the materials, ask the dentist, who can explain what is used and why.
Yes. Fluoride varnish is applied in small amounts and sets quickly, reducing the amount swallowed. It is widely used for children, including toddlers at higher risk of cavities. The dentist will recommend an appropriate frequency.
No. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of teeth, but cavities can still form between teeth and along the gumline. Brushing, flossing, a healthy diet and regular checkups remain essential for keeping teeth healthy over the long term.
Sealants can last several years with proper care. The dentist checks them at each visit and can repair or reapply them if they wear down or chip. Avoiding chewing on ice and hard objects helps them last longer.
