Back teeth have deep pits and grooves where food and bacteria collect, and toothbrush bristles often cannot reach the bottom of them. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted onto these surfaces to keep bacteria out. Fluoride, applied as a varnish or gel, strengthens enamel and helps reverse very early decay. Together they are common preventive measures for children and teens.
Hillcrest families can ask about sealants and fluoride at their child’s next visit to our Port Dover office. The dentist will assess your child’s risk of decay, explain which treatments would be helpful and describe how each is applied in a quick, comfortable appointment that needs no freezing.

Who benefits
Children who have had cavities, eat frequent snacks or sugary drinks, have deep grooves in their teeth, wear orthodontic appliances or have difficulty brushing well may benefit most. The dentist considers these factors along with what they see during the exam. Some children with low risk may need fewer preventive treatments, and the dentist will explain the reasoning behind any recommendation.
Sealants are often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, typically around ages six and twelve, when they are most vulnerable. Baby molars with deep grooves may also be sealed in some cases. Fluoride varnish can be applied at regular visits throughout childhood. Ask the dentist how timing fits with your child’s development.
Sealants
The tooth is cleaned and dried, and a mild solution is applied to the chewing surface to help the sealant bond. The solution is then rinsed off and the tooth is dried again. Keeping the tooth dry is important, so cotton rolls or other isolation may be used. The process is painless and usually takes only a few minutes per tooth.
The liquid sealant is painted into the grooves, where it flows into the pits and fissures. A curing light hardens it within seconds. The dentist checks the bite and makes any small adjustments. Your child can eat and drink normally afterwards. The sealant may feel slightly different to the tongue at first but quickly becomes unnoticeable.
Fluoride
Fluoride makes enamel more resistant to the acids produced by bacteria and can help remineralize very early areas of decay before they become cavities. Fluoride toothpaste provides daily protection, while professional fluoride offers a higher concentration applied periodically. The dentist will recommend an appropriate amount of toothpaste for your child’s age, as swallowing too much is not advised.
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth with a small brush and sets quickly when it contacts saliva. It may have a mild taste and can leave teeth looking slightly yellow until brushed off later. Your child may be asked to avoid hard or hot foods and brushing for a few hours to allow the fluoride to work.
Ongoing care
Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip, especially with chewing hard foods or ice. At regular checkups the dentist inspects them and can repair or reapply them if needed. Let the dentist know if your child mentions a rough spot or something feeling different on a back tooth between visits, so it can be checked.
Sealants protect only the chewing surfaces, and fluoride does not replace brushing. Help your child brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth where they touch and limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. Water between meals is best. These habits, together with regular dental visits, give teeth the strongest overall protection as your child grows.
Planning your appointment
Ask about sealants and fluoride when booking your child’s next checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist will assess which treatments are appropriate and can often apply them during the same appointment.
If your child’s new molars have recently come in, mention it so the dentist can check whether sealants would be helpful now.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Sealants are painted onto the tooth surface without drilling or needles. Most children find the process easy and quick. The hardest part for some is keeping the mouth open and dry for a few minutes while each tooth is treated.
Sealants can last several years, although they may wear or chip over time. The dentist checks them at regular visits and can repair or replace them if needed. Avoiding chewing ice and hard candy helps them last longer.
Fluoride is widely used to prevent tooth decay when applied in appropriate amounts. The dentist will recommend a suitable toothpaste amount for your child’s age. Professional varnish is applied in small quantities by the dental team.
Adults with deep grooves and no decay or fillings on those surfaces may sometimes benefit from sealants. They are most commonly used for children and teens, but the dentist can advise whether they would help you as well.
No. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth, but cavities can still form between teeth and along the gumline. Brushing, cleaning between teeth, healthy snacking and regular checkups remain important even after sealants are placed.
Regular dental exams follow a child’s teeth as they grow. Hillcrest families can learn what a checkup at our Port Dover office looks at and how to prepare.
When a child has a cavity, the right step depends on the tooth and the child. Hillcrest families can discuss treatment and comfort with our Port Dover team.
