Children’s back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria collect, and toothbrush bristles cannot always reach the bottom. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted into those grooves. Fluoride, applied as a varnish or gel, strengthens enamel and helps reverse very early decay. Together, they add a layer of protection on top of good brushing and healthy eating.
Hagersville families can ask about sealants and fluoride during their child’s visits at our Port Dover office. Both are usually quick and can often be done during a routine checkup, which saves an extra trip.

What sealants do
A sealant is a liquid resin that flows into the pits and fissures on chewing surfaces and hardens into a smooth layer. This makes it harder for food and bacteria to settle in the grooves and easier to brush clean. Sealants do not replace brushing, but they can greatly reduce the chance of cavities forming on those surfaces.
Sealants are most often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, typically around ages six and twelve. Some children benefit from sealants on premolars or baby molars with deep grooves. The dentist checks each tooth and recommends sealants based on its shape and your child’s risk of decay.
How fluoride helps
Fluoride helps enamel rebuild minerals lost to acid attacks and makes the surface more resistant to future decay. Professional fluoride varnish is painted on teeth and sets quickly. It contains a higher concentration than toothpaste, so it is applied by the dental team. It can also help reduce sensitivity and stop very early decay from progressing.
Children with a history of cavities, braces, deep grooves, frequent snacking or limited access to fluoridated water may benefit most. The dentist considers your child’s risk and recommends how often fluoride should be applied. Fluoride toothpaste at home, used in age-appropriate amounts, remains an important daily foundation as well.
The appointment
For sealants, the tooth is cleaned, dried and prepared with a gentle solution so the sealant can bond. The liquid is painted into the grooves and hardened with a special light. No freezing or drilling is usually needed. Your child just needs to keep their mouth open and the tooth dry for a few minutes per tooth.
Fluoride varnish is brushed onto the teeth in a thin layer and sets almost immediately. It may feel slightly sticky. Your child may be asked to avoid hot drinks, crunchy foods and brushing for a few hours afterwards so the varnish can work. The team will give specific instructions before you leave for Hagersville.
Looking after them
Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip over time. The dentist checks them at each checkup and can repair or replace them if needed. Encourage your child not to chew ice or hard objects, which can damage sealants. If you notice a rough spot or missing piece, mention it at the next visit.
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and help your child floss once teeth touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals. Offer water instead of juice. Sealants protect the grooves, and fluoride strengthens enamel, but neither protects the areas between teeth as well as daily cleaning does.
Planning your appointment
When booking your child’s checkup at our Port Dover office, ask whether sealants or fluoride might be recommended. The team can often include them in the same visit to save an extra trip.
Bring information about your child’s brushing habits, snacks and water source, as these help the dentist assess their cavity risk.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Sealants are widely used and considered safe. They are applied in small amounts to the chewing surfaces of teeth. If you have specific concerns about materials, the dentist can discuss them and explain the products used.
No. Placing sealants usually requires no freezing or drilling. The tooth is cleaned and the sealant is painted on, then hardened with a light. Most children find the process quick and easy.
It depends on their cavity risk. Some children benefit from fluoride at each checkup, others less often. The dentist will recommend a schedule based on your child’s history, habits and teeth.
Yes, in some cases. Adults with deep grooves, dry mouth, exposed roots or a high risk of decay may benefit. Ask the dentist whether either treatment would be helpful for you or other family members.
Sealants greatly reduce the risk of cavities in the grooves of back teeth, but cavities can still form between teeth and on other surfaces. Brushing, flossing and healthy snacks remain essential.
