The chewing surfaces of back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria can hide, even with good brushing. Sealants are thin coatings painted onto these grooves to help keep them clean. Fluoride treatments strengthen enamel and can help reverse very early decay. Together, they are common preventive steps for children at risk of cavities.
Glen Meyer families can ask about sealants and fluoride during their child’s checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist will consider your child’s cavity risk, the teeth involved and their age, and explain whether either treatment is likely to be helpful right now or better left for later.

Who benefits
Children who have had cavities before, snack frequently, sip sugary drinks or have deep grooves in their teeth may benefit more from sealants and fluoride. Some medical conditions and medications that cause dry mouth can also raise risk. The dentist will look at these factors, as well as brushing habits, to recommend the most appropriate preventive steps for your child.
Sealants are most often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, typically around the early school years and again in the pre-teen years. Some baby molars or premolars with deep grooves may also be sealed. The dentist will explain which teeth are good candidates and why, and when it may be best to apply them.
Sealant placement
The tooth is cleaned and dried, and a mild solution is applied to help the sealant bond to the enamel. The tooth is then rinsed and dried again. Keeping the tooth dry is important for a good bond, so the team may use cotton rolls or a small device to keep saliva away. No numbing or drilling is usually needed for this step.
The liquid sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a special light. The dentist checks that it is set and that the bite feels comfortable. Your child can usually eat and drink normally afterward. Sealants may feel slightly different at first, but most children quickly get used to them and stop noticing them.
Fluoride care
Professional fluoride is often applied as a varnish painted onto the teeth, or as a gel or foam held in a tray. It sets quickly, and your child may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a short time afterward. The dentist may recommend fluoride at regular visits depending on your child’s cavity risk, age and history.
Using a fluoride toothpaste in the right amount for your child’s age is one of the most effective ways to protect teeth at home. Supervise brushing so children do not swallow too much toothpaste. Ask the team how much to use and whether any additional fluoride products are recommended, such as a rinse for older children.
Keeping protection
Sealants can last several years, but they may wear down or chip over time with normal chewing. The dentist will check them at regular visits and repair or reapply them when needed. Let the team know if your child mentions a rough spot or something feeling different on a sealed tooth, so it can be looked at before decay has a chance to start.
Sealants protect only the grooves of the chewing surfaces, so brushing and cleaning between teeth remain essential every day. Limiting frequent sugary snacks and drinks helps reduce the risk of cavities on all surfaces. Regular checkups allow the dentist to track your child’s risk and adjust preventive recommendations as they grow and their diet and habits change.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and ask whether sealants or fluoride may be recommended at your child’s next visit. The team can often combine these with a routine checkup and cleaning in one trip.
Mention any cavity history, dry mouth or medications, and bring your questions about how much toothpaste is right for your child’s age.

No. Sealants protect the grooves of the chewing surfaces, but brushing, cleaning between teeth and healthy eating are still needed to prevent cavities on other surfaces. Think of sealants as an extra layer of protection rather than a substitute for daily care.
Sealants can last several years with normal chewing, but they may gradually wear or chip. The dentist will check them at each regular visit and repair or reapply them if needed, so the grooves stay protected while the molars are most vulnerable.
When used in the right amounts, fluoride is widely recommended to help prevent tooth decay. Supervising toothpaste use and following the dentist’s advice on professional treatments help ensure your child receives an appropriate amount for their age and risk.
Sometimes, if a baby molar has deep grooves and your child is at higher risk of cavities. More often, sealants are placed on permanent molars. The dentist will recommend which teeth would benefit based on an examination.
Often, the team will ask your child to avoid eating or drinking for a short time after a fluoride treatment, so it has time to work on the enamel. Follow the specific instructions given at the appointment, as they can vary with the product used.
