Extra protection for growing teeth

Two simple measures can help prevent cavities before they start.

Back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria can get trapped, making them a common place for cavities to form, especially in children. Sealants are thin protective coatings painted into these grooves to help keep them clean. Fluoride varnish strengthens enamel and can help reverse very early decay. Both are quick, painless and often recommended as part of a child’s preventive care.

Families from Fishers Glen can ask about sealants and fluoride during their child’s checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist will assess your child’s teeth and cavity risk and explain whether either treatment is likely to be helpful at this stage, and how it fits alongside brushing and diet at home.

Who benefits

Recommendations depend on your child’s risk.

Children at higher risk

Children with a history of cavities, deep grooves on their back teeth, braces, frequent snacking or difficulty brushing thoroughly may benefit most from sealants and fluoride. The dentist will look at your child’s teeth and habits and discuss their individual risk. Not every child needs both treatments, and the recommendation may change over time as habits and teeth change.

Timing and tooth eruption

Sealants are often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, typically around the ages when the first and second adult molars erupt. Some baby teeth may also be sealed if they have deep grooves. Fluoride varnish may be applied at regular checkups throughout childhood, depending on risk and other fluoride sources such as toothpaste and drinking water.

Sealants

Sealants are applied in a single quick visit.

  1. Applying the sealant

The tooth is cleaned and dried, and a mild solution is applied to help the sealant bond. The sealant material is then painted into the grooves and hardened with a light. There is no drilling or freezing for most sealants. Your child may notice the tooth feels slightly smoother or different, but this usually goes unnoticed within a day.

  2. Checking and maintaining

Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip over time. The dentist checks them at regular visits and can repair or reapply them if needed. Sealants do not replace brushing and cleaning between teeth, but they add an extra layer of protection to the areas most prone to decay, particularly while children are still learning to brush well.

Fluoride

Fluoride strengthens enamel and can reverse early decay.

Fluoride varnish at the office

Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth with a small brush. It sets quickly and stays on the teeth for several hours, allowing enamel to absorb the fluoride. Your child may need to avoid certain foods or brushing for a short time afterward. The dentist will give specific instructions after the application, and most children find it quick and easy.

Fluoride at home

Using a fluoride toothpaste in the right amount for your child’s age is one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities. Use a smear for children under three and a pea-sized amount for older children, or as the dentist advises. Supervise brushing so children spit out rather than swallow the toothpaste, and avoid rinsing straight afterwards.

Ongoing prevention

Sealants and fluoride work best with good habits.

  • Daily habits

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and help your child until they can brush well on their own. Clean between teeth once they touch. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals and before bed. Encourage water as the main drink between meals, which helps rinse teeth and supports overall health without feeding cavity-causing bacteria.

  • Regular checkups

Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor sealants, apply fluoride if appropriate and catch early cavities. Ask about your child’s cavity risk at each visit, as it may change with age, diet, braces or other factors. Early detection makes treatment simpler and more comfortable for children, and it helps them stay relaxed about coming back.

Sealant and fluoride questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Do sealants hurt?

No. Sealants are painted onto the teeth without drilling or freezing in most cases. Your child may feel the tooth is slightly different at first, but the process is quick and comfortable. Many children are surprised by how little there is to it.

How long do sealants last?

Sealants can last several years with normal wear. The dentist checks them at each visit and can repair or replace them if they chip or wear down. Regular checkups help keep them effective, and avoiding chewing ice or hard candy helps too.

Is fluoride varnish safe for young children?

Fluoride varnish is applied in small amounts and is commonly used for children. The dentist will consider your child’s age and other fluoride sources when recommending it. Ask any questions you have about safety, and the team will explain the reasoning.

Can adults get sealants?

Sealants are most often placed on children’s teeth, but adults with deep grooves and no decay or fillings may also benefit. The dentist can assess whether sealants are appropriate for you at your next checkup and explain what difference they might make.

Does my child still need to brush with sealants?

Yes. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth, but brushing and cleaning between teeth are still essential to prevent decay on other surfaces and keep gums healthy. Think of sealants as an extra layer, not a replacement for daily care.
