Welcoming Delhi families at our office in Port Dover
All dental services for DelhiUnderstand the purpose of each preventive step
When preventive treatment is recommended for your child, it is useful to know which tooth or risk the advice addresses. A sealant covers selected grooves on a tooth’s chewing surface. Fluoride supports resistance to decay at the tooth surface. Neither removes the need for daily cleaning and regular assessment.
Delhi families can discuss these options at our Port Dover practice. Ask why a recommendation fits your child’s teeth, what the appointment involves and how the result will be checked later.

Assess the individual need
The clinician considers the teeth present, their surfaces, previous decay and relevant home-care information. Not every child needs the same preventive plan at the same age. Ask which teeth are being considered and whether the recommendation is for sealants, fluoride or both.
Describe toothpaste, rinses and supplements already used, and identify the usual drinking-water source. If you are unsure of product details, bring their names or ask what information would help. Do not assume an amount of fluoride from a location or label alone; the clinician needs relevant information about the sources in your child's routine.
Seal the selected grooves
Sealants are applied to suitable tooth surfaces after preparation and drying. Ask how the clinician will assess the tooth before placement and whether it has emerged enough for the planned care. The coating protects the treated grooves rather than every surface of the tooth.
If decay is identified, ask how it changes the recommendation for that area. A sealant is not interchangeable with a filling for an established cavity, and a dark groove alone does not name the required procedure. The explanation should connect the actual finding with either preventive care, treatment or further assessment.
Discuss fluoride care
Professional fluoride may be recommended as part of an individual preventive plan. Ask about the form being used, its purpose and any eating or brushing instructions afterwards. Those directions can differ between products, so follow the ones provided at the appointment.
Review the home routine using age-appropriate professional guidance, including how existing products fit alongside the proposed treatment. A professional application does not mean you should independently add a supplement or stronger product. Clarify the recommendation before changing the routine so the sources and instructions are considered together for your child.
Check and maintain protection
Sealants can wear or need attention, so their condition is reviewed at dental visits. Ask when your child should return and what you should report if the bite feels unusual or a surface seems different after placement.
Continue brushing, between-tooth cleaning and the dietary guidance discussed with the team, including care of surfaces a sealant does not cover. Preventive treatment addresses particular risks without guaranteeing a cavity-free future. As teeth emerge and the routine changes, use reviews to check whether the same measures still suit your child's needs.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office if sealants or fluoride have been suggested for your child. Tell us about previous treatment and ask whether assessment and application require separate arrangements.
Bring questions about products used at home and your child’s cleaning routine. Before leaving, confirm the aftercare instructions and how the treated teeth will be reviewed.

That depends on the assessment. They have different roles, and one does not automatically replace the other. Ask which surfaces or risks the recommendation addresses and how each measure fits with the care your child already receives.
A sealant is placed on selected pits and grooves, usually on chewing surfaces. It does not cover all the spaces between teeth. Continue the cleaning method recommended for those areas and ask for a demonstration if they are difficult to reach.
Yes. Their condition should be reviewed during dental care because wear or loss of material may require attention. Ask about your child’s review schedule rather than assuming the coating remains fully intact for a fixed number of years.
Do not add one without an individual recommendation. Discuss your child’s age, usual water source and existing products with the clinician. The appropriate plan should consider total exposure and dental needs rather than adding products independently.
The dentist needs to assess that area and explain the appropriate care. Preventive measures may still have a role elsewhere, but they should not be assumed to replace treatment for the affected tooth. Ask how prevention and treatment will be coordinated.
If a child's cleaning is partly completed, ask what remains and how to continue. Delhi families can discuss the next visit and home-care steps in Port Dover.
If a child's cavity care needs referral, clarify who will treat the tooth and whom to call while waiting. Our Delhi guide covers this and appointment preparation.
