Back teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria collect, and brushing cannot always reach them. Sealants are thin coatings that fill these grooves. Fluoride varnish strengthens enamel and helps it resist acid. Together, they are simple preventive steps that can reduce the risk of cavities in children and some adults.
Families in Cultus can ask about sealants and fluoride at their child’s checkup at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at your child’s teeth, consider their risk of decay and explain whether these treatments are likely to be helpful. Both are quick and comfortable.

How sealants work
Molars and premolars have pits and fissures that can trap food. A sealant is a liquid resin that flows into these grooves and hardens, creating a smooth surface that is easier to clean. Sealants do not replace brushing, but they add a physical barrier against decay on chewing surfaces. They are clear or tooth-coloured and hard to spot.
Sealants are often placed on permanent molars soon after they come in, usually around ages six and twelve. They may also be recommended for baby molars with deep grooves or for teens and adults at higher risk. The dentist will check that the tooth is free of decay first. Timing matters, because grooves are most vulnerable soon after a tooth erupts.
How fluoride works
Fluoride strengthens enamel and can help reverse very early decay before it becomes a cavity. Professional fluoride varnish is painted on the teeth and sets quickly. It provides a concentrated dose that complements fluoride toothpaste and, where present, fluoridated water. Varnish is safe when applied by a dental professional. Only a small amount is used.
Children at higher risk of cavities, people with dry mouth, those with orthodontic appliances and anyone with exposed root surfaces may benefit. Rural homes sometimes rely on well water, which may contain little fluoride. Ask the dentist whether varnish is recommended and how often. If you are unsure about your water supply, the dentist can explain how that might affect your child’s needs.
The application
For sealants, the tooth is cleaned and dried, a conditioning solution is applied briefly and rinsed off, then the sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a light. No numbing or drilling is needed. Each tooth takes only a few minutes, and children can eat normally afterward. The bite is checked at the end.
Fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth with a small brush. It may feel slightly sticky. Your child should avoid hot drinks, hard or sticky foods and brushing for a few hours afterward, as advised by the dental team, so the varnish can work effectively. A slight yellow tint may be visible until the next brushing.
Maintaining protection
Sealants can last several years but may wear or chip. The dentist checks them at regular visits and can repair or replace them if needed. Let the office know if your child notices a rough area or feels the sealant has come off a tooth. Repairs are usually quick and can often be done at a routine checkup.
Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, limiting sugary snacks and drinks and regular checkups are still essential. Sealants protect chewing surfaces, but cavities can still form between teeth. Help your child brush until they have the skills to do it thoroughly on their own. Flossing once teeth touch protects the surfaces sealants cannot reach on their own.
Planning your appointment
Ask about sealants and fluoride at your child’s next checkup at our Port Dover office, or call to arrange a visit specifically for preventive care. Siblings can often be seen together.
If your home uses well water, mention it. The dentist may consider your child’s fluoride exposure when making recommendations for treatment at home and in the office.

Sealants are widely used and considered safe. The dentist can answer any questions about the materials and why sealants are recommended for your child. Placement involves no drilling or numbing, which most children and parents appreciate.
They can last several years but may wear over time. The dentist checks them at checkups and can repair or replace them when needed. Avoiding chewing on ice or hard candy helps them last longer.
Yes, when applied by a dental professional. Only a small amount is used, and it sets quickly on the teeth. The dentist will explain how often it is recommended for your child’s level of risk.
Some adults with deep grooves, dry mouth, exposed roots or a high risk of decay may benefit. Ask the dentist whether these treatments would help you, especially if cavities have become more frequent lately or your mouth feels dry.
Sealants are generally placed on healthy teeth. If a tooth has decay, it needs to be treated first. Very early changes may sometimes be sealed after assessment and monitored closely at regular checkups afterward for any change.
Regular children’s dental exams track growth, catch decay early and build confidence. See what a checkup involves for Cultus kids at our Port Dover office.
