When a dental problem strikes, being seen the same day can bring relief and prevent things from getting worse. Same-day emergency appointments are offered when the schedule allows and the problem is urgent. Calling early, describing your symptoms clearly and being flexible about timing all improve the chance of finding a suitable opening that day.
Walsingham patients can call our Port Dover office as soon as a dental emergency arises. The team will ask about your symptoms, explain whether a same-day appointment is available and, if not, advise on the next appropriate step. Availability cannot be promised, but the team will help you plan.

Calling in
Same-day openings are limited and often filled quickly. Calling as soon as the office opens gives the best chance of an appointment. If the problem started overnight, note when it began and how it has changed. Have your phone nearby in case the team calls back with an opening.
Explain the location and type of pain, any swelling, fever, injury or bleeding, and whether you can eat and sleep. Mention medical conditions and medications. This helps the team understand urgency. Severe swelling, uncontrolled bleeding and trauma are usually prioritized over less urgent concerns.
Availability
The number of same-day appointments depends on staff, scheduled patients and other emergencies. Some days have more flexibility than others. Being willing to come at short notice, or to wait for a cancellation, can help. The team will let you know what options exist.
If there is no same-day opening, the team may offer the next available appointment and advise on managing symptoms until then. If your condition worsens, call back. For serious symptoms such as swelling affecting breathing, go to an emergency department rather than waiting.
At the appointment
A same-day emergency appointment usually concentrates on diagnosing the problem and relieving pain. The dentist examines the area, may take an X-ray and explains what is happening. Treatment may include starting a root canal, placing a temporary filling, smoothing a broken tooth or prescribing medication when appropriate.
Complete treatment may need another visit. The dentist will outline what has been done, what remains and how urgent it is. If specialist care is needed, a referral may be suggested. Ask about costs and timing so you can plan the follow-up.
Until you are seen
Rinse with warm salt water, use a cold compress on the outside of the face and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed if it is safe for you. Avoid chewing on the affected side and steer clear of very hot, cold or sugary foods. Save any broken pieces of tooth or restorations.
If swelling spreads quickly, affects your eye or neck, or makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to an emergency department. High fever and feeling very unwell are also urgent signs. Do not wait for a dental appointment in these situations.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as early as you can. Describe your symptoms and let the team know how quickly you could get to the office if an opening appears.
Have a list of medications and allergies ready, and bring any recovered tooth fragments or loose restorations to the appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Availability depends on the day’s schedule and the urgency of your problem. The team will do what they can and suggest alternatives if no opening is available.
Severe pain, swelling, infection, broken or knocked-out teeth and bleeding are common reasons. Call and describe your situation so the team can assess urgency.
Sometimes. Often, the first visit focuses on relief and diagnosis, with a follow-up appointment needed to complete treatment.
Call first. The team needs to know your symptoms and check availability. Arriving without notice may mean a long wait or no appointment that day.
Call the office again to update the team. If you develop spreading swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing or high fever, go to an emergency department.
An emergency dental exam focuses on finding the cause of sudden pain, swelling or damage. Walsingham patients can learn what it involves and what the visit may not include.
