Some dental problems should be seen as soon as possible, such as severe pain, swelling or a knocked-out adult tooth. Our office tries to accommodate urgent concerns, but availability changes day to day. Calling early and describing your symptoms clearly helps the team decide how quickly you need to be seen and what options exist.
If you are at home or on holiday in Turkey Point and something urgent happens, phone our Port Dover office first. The team will listen to your symptoms and talk through the next appropriate step.

When to request it
Severe or worsening tooth pain, swelling of the gum or face, a knocked-out or badly loosened adult tooth, a broken tooth with significant pain and bleeding after an extraction that will not stop are reasons to call right away. The team will ask questions to understand how urgent the situation is.
A small chip without pain, a lost filling without sensitivity or mild discomfort that has been stable for a while may be able to wait for a regular appointment. If you are unsure, call and describe the problem. The team can advise whether you need to be seen today or can safely book later.
Making the call
Explain where the pain is, how severe it is and whether it is constant or comes and goes. Mention swelling, fever, bleeding, recent injury or difficulty opening your mouth. If a tooth was knocked out, say how it is being stored. The more specific you are, the better the team can prioritize.
Let the office know about medical conditions, allergies and medications, including blood thinners. If you are visiting and have a regular dentist elsewhere, have their contact information handy. Ask what to bring and whether you should take pain relief before arriving.
If you are seen
The dentist examines the problem area and may take X-rays to identify the cause. They will explain what they find and discuss options. The aim of a same-day visit is usually to relieve pain, control infection or stabilize a damaged tooth, rather than complete all treatment at once.
Some treatment may be started during the visit, while more involved care may be scheduled for later. You will receive aftercare instructions. Ask when follow-up is needed and what symptoms should prompt you to call again. Keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel better.
If no opening exists
If the schedule is full, the team may offer the earliest available time and suggest ways to manage symptoms in the meantime, such as cold compresses, over-the-counter pain relief if suitable and avoiding chewing on the affected side. Call back if symptoms change or worsen before your appointment.
Go to the emergency department or call 911 for swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or serious head injury. Hospital care may be needed while you wait for dental treatment, and the dental team can follow up afterward.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as early in the day as possible to describe the urgent problem. The team will discuss availability and advise on the safest next step.
Have your medication list and your regular dentist’s details ready. Keep any broken pieces or knocked-out teeth properly stored.
