Save the natural tooth

Root canal treatment removes infection from inside the tooth.

Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, containing nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, cracks, repeated dental work or injury can inflame or infect this tissue. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals and seals them, allowing you to keep the tooth rather than having it extracted.

If you are in Walsh and have a tooth that may need a root canal, our Port Dover office can assess it. The dentist will explain the diagnosis, what treatment involves, how many visits it may take and how the tooth will be protected afterwards, so you can decide with full information.

Signs

Some teeth hurt, and some stay silent.

Symptoms that suggest pulp problems

Pain that lingers for minutes after hot or cold, throbbing or spontaneous toothache, pain when biting, swelling of the gum or face, a pimple on the gum or a tooth that has darkened over time can all indicate that the pulp is inflamed or infected. Note when the pain started, what triggers it and whether it wakes you at night, as these details help with diagnosis.

Problems with no symptoms

Sometimes the nerve dies quietly, without much pain at all, and an infection is found only on an X-ray at a routine checkup. This is one reason regular exams and imaging matter. The dentist will use tests and X-rays to determine whether a root canal is genuinely needed, or whether another explanation, such as gum inflammation or a crack, is more likely.

Diagnosis

Understanding the options helps you choose.

Tests and imaging

The dentist may apply cold to several teeth, tap gently on them and test the bite to compare responses. X-rays show the roots and the surrounding bone, including any dark areas that suggest infection. Together these findings help determine whether the pulp can recover, needs treatment or the tooth cannot be saved. You will hear the likely diagnosis and how certain it is.

Root canal versus extraction

Root canal treatment preserves your natural tooth, but it usually needs a crown afterwards, adding to the cost and number of visits. Extraction is quicker but leaves a gap that may need an implant, bridge or partial denture later. The dentist will compare both options with you honestly, including cost, time and the long-term outlook for each.

Treatment

Modern root canal treatment is often more comfortable than people fear.

  1. Cleaning the canals

The tooth is numbed and isolated with a thin rubber sheet to keep it clean and dry. A small opening is made to reach the pulp, which is then removed. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected with fine instruments and rinses. Treatment may be completed in one visit or spread over more than one, depending on the tooth and the infection.

  2. Sealing and restoring

The cleaned canals are filled with a rubber-like material, and the opening is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling. Some complex cases, such as teeth with curved or hidden canals, may be referred to an endodontist, a root canal specialist. Ask about scheduling if you need to plan the trip from Walsh for more than one appointment.

Afterwards

Completing the restoration is important.

  • The first few days

Some tenderness for a few days is common, particularly when biting on the treated tooth. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you. Avoid chewing hard foods on that tooth until it has its permanent restoration. Call the office if swelling develops, pain worsens rather than eases, or the temporary filling comes loose.

  • Protecting the tooth long term

Back teeth that have had root canal treatment become more brittle and are prone to cracking, so they usually need a crown. Delaying the final restoration increases the risk of fracture or of bacteria leaking back in. Keep regular checkups, so the dentist can monitor healing on follow-up X-rays and confirm the infection has resolved.

Root canal questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does a root canal hurt?

The tooth is numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during treatment. Many find it relieves the pain they had beforehand. Some tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days without trouble.

How many visits does a root canal take?

Some are completed in one visit, while others need two or more, depending on the tooth’s complexity and the degree of infection. The dentist will give you an estimate before treatment starts, so you can plan your schedule.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth usually need a crown to protect them from cracking under chewing forces. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling instead. The dentist will recommend the restoration that gives the tooth the best long-term outlook.

Can I just take antibiotics instead?

Antibiotics may help with spreading infection but cannot clean out the infected pulp inside the tooth. Root canal treatment or extraction is needed to remove the source and resolve the problem properly so it does not keep returning.

How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?

With a good final restoration and care, many treated teeth last for many years, often a lifetime. Regular checkups and X-rays help monitor healing and catch any issues with the tooth or its restoration early on.
