Caring for Vittoria patients at our Port Dover office

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can cause the pulp to become inflamed or infected, often leading to lingering pain, sensitivity or swelling. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them to keep bacteria out.
If you are in Vittoria and have been told you may need a root canal, or you have symptoms that suggest a nerve problem, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess the tooth. You will hear what the X-rays and tests show, whether the tooth can be saved and how treatment compares with extraction and replacement.

Signs and diagnosis
Pain that lingers after hot or cold, throbbing that keeps you awake, tenderness when chewing, swelling of the gum or face and a pimple on the gum near one tooth can all point to pulp inflammation or infection. A tooth that has darkened after an injury may also be involved. Some infected teeth cause no pain at all and are found on X-rays during routine care.
The dentist will ask about your symptoms, examine the tooth, apply cold or other tests and take X-rays to look for signs of infection at the root tip. Several teeth may be tested to pinpoint the source. You will be told what the findings suggest and how confident the diagnosis is, along with any reasons for further testing.
Choosing treatment
A root canal can allow you to keep a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. Saving the tooth avoids the need for an implant, bridge or partial denture and maintains your natural bite. However, if the tooth is badly cracked or lacks enough structure to restore, extraction may be more sensible. The dentist will compare the outlook for each option honestly.
Some teeth have complex canal anatomy, previous treatment that needs redoing or other complications. In these cases, the dentist may suggest referral to an endodontist, a dentist who focuses on root canal treatment. The dentist will explain why referral is recommended and what that appointment is likely to involve, so you can plan accordingly. Records can be sent ahead.
The treatment
The tooth is numbed, and a protective sheet called a rubber dam is placed to keep the area clean and dry. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth, and the infected or inflamed pulp is removed. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected. Many people find the procedure feels similar to having a filling, rather than the painful experience they imagined.
Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening. Depending on the tooth and infection, treatment may be completed in one visit or spread over two. The dentist will explain the plan and what to expect between appointments, including how to protect the tooth.
Recovery and crown
Some tenderness for a few days is common, especially when biting. Ask a pharmacist or physician about suitable pain relief. Avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until it has been fully restored. Contact the office if pain increases, swelling develops or the temporary filling comes out, so the tooth can be checked before the problem worsens.
Back teeth that have had root canal treatment often need a crown to prevent fracture, since they can become brittle. The dentist will recommend the most suitable final restoration. Regular checkups and X-rays allow the dentist to monitor healing at the root tip. Good home care protects the tooth from new decay at its edges.

With local anaesthetic, most people find a root canal feels similar to a filling. The pain people associate with root canals usually comes from the infection beforehand. Some tenderness afterward is common and generally settles within a few days with appropriate care.
Some root canals are completed in one visit, while others need two or more, depending on the tooth, the number of canals and the presence of infection. The dentist will explain the expected number of visits before starting treatment.
Teeth that have had root canal treatment, particularly back teeth, can become brittle and are at risk of fracture. A crown helps protect the tooth from breaking. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling. The dentist will explain the recommendation for your tooth.
Most root canals are successful, but sometimes infection persists or returns, especially if the tooth is not restored properly or has complex anatomy. Retreatment or other options may be possible. Regular checkups help monitor the tooth over the years.
Extraction removes the problem but leaves a gap that may need replacement. Saving a natural tooth is often preferred if it can be restored predictably. The dentist will compare both options so you can make an informed decision that suits you.
