Inside every tooth is a soft core called the pulp, containing nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals inside the roots and seals them, allowing you to keep the natural tooth rather than lose it.
If you live in Vanessa and have been told you may need a root canal, the dentist at our Port Dover office will explain why, what the alternatives are and what to expect. Most root canals are completed in one or two visits, and the tooth usually needs a crown or filling afterward.

Signs you may need one
Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the trigger is gone, throbbing pain, pain that wakes you at night or pain when biting can suggest the pulp is inflamed or infected. Sometimes a tooth darkens after an old injury. Not every painful tooth needs a root canal, so the dentist will test the tooth carefully before deciding.
Swelling of the gum, a pimple-like bump that drains, a bad taste or tenderness in the jaw can indicate an abscess at the root. Some infected teeth cause no pain at all and are found on X-rays. Facial swelling that spreads, fever or difficulty breathing or swallowing need emergency medical care right away, before any dental visit.
Diagnosis and options
The dentist examines the tooth, takes X-rays and may test it with cold, tapping or gentle pressure to see how the nerve responds. These findings help determine whether the pulp can recover, needs root canal treatment, or whether the tooth cannot be saved. The dentist will explain what they see and how confident they are in the diagnosis.
The main alternative to a root canal is removing the tooth. Extraction may be quicker, but leaves a gap that may need an implant, bridge or partial denture to prevent shifting and maintain chewing. Keeping your natural tooth is often preferred when it can be restored well. Ask about long-term outlook, costs and visits for each option.
The treatment
The tooth is numbed thoroughly, and a small protective sheet is placed to keep it dry and clean. The dentist creates a small opening, removes the damaged pulp and carefully cleans, shapes and disinfects the canals. This may take one or two appointments, depending on the tooth and whether infection is present. You can raise a hand at any time for a break.
Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening. Back teeth often need a crown afterward to protect them from cracking, since treated teeth can become brittle. Complex cases may be referred to an endodontist, a root canal specialist, and the dentist will explain why.
Recovery
Some tenderness or soreness when biting is common for a few days as the surrounding tissues settle. Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed usually helps. Avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until it has been fully restored. Call the office if pain worsens, swelling develops or the temporary filling falls out before your next visit.
Return for the final restoration as scheduled, since a temporary filling is not designed to last and the tooth can crack or become reinfected without proper protection. Brush and floss as usual, and keep up regular checkups and cleanings. A well-treated and restored tooth can often last for many years with good care and attention.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you have lingering pain, swelling or sensitivity. The dentist will examine the tooth, explain whether a root canal is needed and outline how many visits to plan for.
Bring your medication list and allergies, and mention any heart conditions or other health issues that may affect treatment or antibiotics.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The tooth is numbed during treatment, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Many say it feels similar to having a filling. Some tenderness afterward is normal and usually improves within a few days with simple pain relief.
Root canal treated teeth, especially back teeth, can become more brittle and prone to cracking. A crown helps protect the tooth from breaking under chewing forces. The dentist will recommend whether a crown or filling is best.
Antibiotics may help control spreading infection, but they cannot clean out infected pulp inside the tooth. Root canal treatment or extraction is needed to remove the source. The dentist will explain your options and why medication alone tends to give only temporary relief.
Many root canals are completed in one or two appointments, though complex teeth may take longer. The dentist will give you an estimate based on the tooth, the number of canals and whether infection is present.
Most root canals succeed, but occasionally a tooth does not heal. Options may include retreatment, a minor surgical procedure or extraction. The dentist or a specialist will explain what is appropriate, based on X-rays and how the tooth is behaving.
A crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Vanessa patients can learn when crowns are recommended, what the two visits involve and how to make one last.
A throbbing tooth, swollen gum or bad taste can signal an abscess. Vanessa patients should call our Port Dover office promptly to have the infection assessed.
