Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for Turkey PointSaving a tooth from the inside
Inside every tooth is soft tissue called pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment cleans out the affected tissue, disinfects the canals and seals them. It often relieves pain and allows you to keep a tooth that might otherwise be lost.
If a tooth is causing lingering pain or swelling, Turkey Point patients can have it assessed at our Port Dover office. Treatment may take more than one visit, so let the team know if you will be leaving the area soon.

Signs and diagnosis
Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, spontaneous throbbing pain, pain that wakes you at night, tenderness when biting, gum swelling or a darkening tooth can suggest the pulp is affected. Some teeth needing root canals cause no symptoms and are found on X-rays. Describe your symptoms in detail to help the dentist.
The dentist may test the tooth with cold, gentle tapping and bite tests, and will take X-rays to look at the root and surrounding bone. These findings help decide whether the pulp can recover, needs root canal treatment or whether the tooth cannot be saved. Ask how confident the dentist is in the diagnosis.
Considering options
The main alternative to root canal treatment is usually extraction. Keeping your natural tooth preserves chewing function and avoids the need to replace it. However, some teeth are too damaged to save. The dentist will explain the outlook for your tooth and what extraction and replacement would involve, so you can compare fairly.
Back teeth often need a crown after root canal treatment because they can become brittle. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling. Ask about the full plan, including the crown, the number of visits and expected timing. Seasonal residents should consider whether all stages can be completed before leaving.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed thoroughly and isolated with a thin rubber sheet to keep it clean and dry. The dentist makes a small opening and removes the infected or inflamed pulp. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected. You may feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Let the dentist know if you do.
Once the canals are clean, they are filled and sealed. Sometimes this happens in one visit; other times medication is placed and the tooth is sealed temporarily until a second appointment. A temporary filling protects the tooth until the final restoration. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until it is fully restored.
Recovery
Tenderness when biting is common for a few days and usually responds to over-the-counter pain relief if suitable for you. Follow any instructions about medication. If swelling develops, pain worsens or the temporary filling comes out, contact the office. Severe or spreading swelling needs prompt attention.
Complete the final restoration as advised, since a temporary filling is not designed to last. With a proper crown or filling, a root canal treated tooth can last many years. Brush, floss and attend regular checkups. Occasionally a tooth needs retreatment, and the dentist will monitor it with periodic X-rays.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe your symptoms and which tooth is bothering you. The team can arrange an assessment and explain how many visits treatment might take.
Bring a medication list and any recent X-rays. Mention if you are leaving the area soon so the dentist can plan accordingly.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The tooth is numbed, and most people feel pressure rather than pain. Tenderness afterward is common and usually settles within a few days.
Some root canals are completed in one appointment, others need two or more. A crown may require additional visits.
Back teeth usually need one to prevent fracture. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling. The dentist will advise.
Antibiotics may help with spreading infection but do not remove infected pulp. The tooth usually still needs treatment.
Infection can worsen, causing more pain, swelling or bone loss, and the tooth may become unsaveable. Prompt assessment is advisable.
A crown covers and strengthens a weakened tooth. Turkey Point patients can learn when a crown is advised, how it is made and how to care for it, all in Port Dover.
Throbbing pain, a gum boil or swelling can mean a dental abscess. Turkey Point patients can learn the warning signs and how infection is treated in Port Dover.
