Caring for Townsend patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for TownsendSaving the natural tooth
Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can allow bacteria to reach it, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals and seals them, allowing the tooth to be kept rather than extracted.
When a tooth may need a root canal, patients from Townsend can be assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will test the tooth, review X-rays and explain whether root canal treatment is recommended, what it involves and how the tooth will be protected afterwards, often with a crown.

Signs you may need one
Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers long after the drink is gone, throbbing that starts on its own, pain that wakes you at night and tenderness when you bite can all indicate an inflamed pulp. A front tooth that has turned grey or dark after a knock may also have a damaged nerve. Some teeth that need treatment cause no pain at all and only show up on an X-ray.
Swelling in the gum or face, a small pimple-like bump on the gum that drains, a bad taste that keeps returning and a tooth that feels raised or loose suggest infection has spread to the tissues around the root. These signs should be assessed promptly. If swelling spreads quickly or begins to affect breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care right away.
Diagnosis
The dentist may touch the tooth with something cold, tap it gently or ask you to bite down on a small instrument, comparing its response with neighbouring teeth. X-rays show the shape of the roots and any dark area at the tip that suggests infection. Together, these findings help show whether the pulp is mildly irritated and may settle, or irreversibly inflamed or dead.
If root canal treatment is recommended, ask about the alternatives, usually removal of the tooth, and what each would mean for chewing, appearance and neighbouring teeth. Saving the tooth keeps your natural root and bite, but a few teeth are too broken down to restore well. The dentist will explain the outlook and whether a referral to an endodontist makes sense.
The treatment
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, and a thin rubber sheet called a dental dam is placed to keep it clean and dry. The dentist makes a small opening in the top of the tooth, removes the damaged pulp and then cleans and shapes each canal with fine instruments and disinfecting rinses. Depending on the tooth, treatment may take one visit or more.
Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a rubber-like sealing material, and a temporary or permanent filling closes the opening. Back teeth usually need a crown afterwards, because a root-treated molar becomes more brittle and can split under chewing forces. The dentist will explain when the final restoration should be placed and why that timing matters.
Recovery
Tenderness when biting for a few days is common and usually responds well to over-the-counter pain relief if it is suitable for you. Chew on the other side and avoid hard or sticky foods on the treated tooth until it has its final restoration. Contact the office if swelling develops, pain becomes worse instead of easing, or a temporary filling breaks or falls out.
A root-treated tooth can serve well for many years once it is properly restored and looked after. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and keep up with regular checkups so the tooth and its crown can be monitored. Follow-up X-rays may be taken some months later to confirm that the bone around the root tip has healed.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 and describe your symptoms, including when the pain happens, how long it lasts and whether there is swelling. The team will discuss how soon you should be seen.
Bring a list of your medications and allergies, and any recent X-rays from another office, so the dentist has the full picture at your appointment.

With local anaesthetic, most people find root canal treatment feels similar to having a larger filling. Some tenderness afterwards is common and usually settles within a few days. Often, the treatment actually relieves the pain that brought you in.
Some root canals are completed in a single visit, while others need two or more, depending on the tooth, how many canals it has, how curved they are and whether infection is present. The dentist will explain what to expect for your tooth.
Back teeth usually need a crown to protect them from cracking, since they become more brittle after treatment and take heavy chewing forces. Front teeth can sometimes be restored with a filling instead. The dentist will recommend what suits that tooth.
The inflammation or infection will not heal by itself and may spread, causing pain, swelling and loss of bone around the root. The alternative is usually removing the tooth. The dentist can explain the risks of each choice so you can decide.
Most root canals are successful, but occasionally infection persists or returns, sometimes years later. Retreatment or minor surgery may be possible in that case. A well-sealed final restoration and good daily cleaning both improve the long-term outlook.
A crown covers and strengthens a damaged or heavily filled tooth. Townsend patients can learn when crowns are advised, how fitting works and how to care for them.
