Saving a tooth from the inside

A root canal can relieve pain and keep your natural tooth.

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment removes the affected pulp, cleans and shapes the canals inside the roots, and seals them so the tooth can stay in your mouth and keep working.

If you are in Silver Hill and have a tooth that aches, throbs or reacts strongly to hot and cold, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess whether root canal treatment is needed. Some complex cases may be referred to an endodontist, and you will be told if that is the case.

Warning signs

Pain is a common signal, but not the only one.

  • Signs the pulp may be affected

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, a deep throbbing ache, pain when biting, a tooth that has darkened, a swollen or tender gum near the tooth, or a small bump that drains pus can suggest the pulp is inflamed or infected. Some people notice pain that wakes them at night or spreads to the ear or jaw.

  • Problems that can be silent

Not every infected tooth hurts. Sometimes the nerve dies quietly and an infection forms at the root tip without obvious symptoms, appearing only on an X-ray. This is one reason regular checkups and X-rays are valuable. If a tooth was injured in the past, it may need monitoring even if it seems fine now.

Diagnosis

Careful testing confirms whether a root canal is the right step.

Testing the tooth

The dentist examines the tooth and gums, takes X-rays and may test how the tooth responds to cold, tapping or biting pressure. These tests help determine whether the pulp can recover or is irreversibly damaged. The results also show whether there is infection in the surrounding bone, which affects the urgency and plan.

Exploring the options

If root canal treatment is recommended, the dentist will explain why and what it involves. The main alternative is extraction, which may then need a replacement such as an implant or bridge. Ask about the likely outcome for the tooth, how many visits are needed and whether a crown will be recommended afterward.

The treatment

Modern root canal treatment is usually comparable to having a filling.

  1. Cleaning the canals

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, and a small sheet called a dam is placed to keep the area clean and dry. An opening is made in the top of the tooth, and the infected or inflamed pulp is removed. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected. Some treatments are completed in one visit, while others need two.

  2. Sealing the tooth

Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling closes the access opening. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment often need a crown to protect them from breaking, because the tooth can become more brittle once the pulp is removed.

Recovery

Most people return to normal activities quickly.

The first few days

Some tenderness or soreness for a few days is common, especially when biting. Over-the-counter pain relief often helps if it is safe for you, but follow the dentist’s advice. Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until it has been fully restored. Contact the office if swelling develops, pain worsens or the temporary filling comes out.

Protecting the tooth long term

If a crown is recommended, book it promptly, since a tooth left with only a temporary filling is more likely to crack or become reinfected. Brush and clean between teeth as usual. Regular checkups and X-rays allow the dentist to confirm that the area around the root is healing well over the following months.

Planning your appointment

Travelling to Port Dover for treatment

If you have tooth pain or swelling, call our Port Dover office and describe your symptoms. The team can advise how soon you should be seen and whether the first visit will include treatment.

Plan to be numb for a few hours afterward. Eat before your appointment if you can, and bring a list of any medications you take.

Root canal questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does a root canal hurt?

The tooth is numbed during treatment, so most people feel little more than pressure. Root canal treatment is usually done to relieve pain caused by an inflamed or infected pulp. Some soreness afterward is normal and typically settles within a few days.

How many visits will I need?

Some root canals are finished in one visit, while others need two or more, especially if there is a significant infection. A crown, if needed, usually involves additional appointments. The dentist will outline the expected number of visits for your tooth.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth often need a crown because they handle strong chewing forces and can become brittle. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling instead. The dentist will recommend the best option based on how much tooth structure remains.

Can I just take antibiotics instead?

Antibiotics may help control spreading infection but cannot remove infected tissue inside the tooth. Without root canal treatment or extraction, the problem is likely to return. The dentist will explain when antibiotics are appropriate alongside treatment.

How long does a root canal tooth last?

Many teeth treated with root canal therapy last for years, particularly when properly restored and cared for. Regular checkups, good home care and protecting the tooth with a crown when advised all help support its long-term health.
