Saving the natural tooth

Root canal treatment can relieve pain and keep a tooth that might otherwise be lost.

Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, containing nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach the pulp, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals and seals them, allowing the tooth to stay in place and function for years.

Many people have heard that root canals are painful, but modern treatment is typically done with effective local anaesthetic, and most patients find it similar to having a filling. For Renton patients, the treatment is provided at our Port Dover office, or a referral to a specialist may be discussed for more complex teeth.

Signs you may need one

Pulp problems often cause noticeable symptoms.

  • Common warning signs

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, spontaneous or throbbing toothache, pain when biting, tenderness in the gum near a tooth, swelling, a pimple-like bump on the gum and darkening of a tooth are signs that the pulp may be inflamed or infected. Note when the pain started and what triggers it, and mention these details when you call.

  • When there are no symptoms

Sometimes a tooth needing root canal treatment causes no symptoms at all, especially if the nerve has died. The problem may be discovered on an X-ray during a routine exam. Even without pain, an infected tooth should be treated, as infection can spread to the surrounding bone and tissues and cause problems later on. Treatment is still worthwhile.

Diagnosis

The dentist confirms whether the pulp can recover.

Testing the tooth

The dentist examines the tooth, takes X-rays and may perform tests such as applying cold, tapping gently or checking how the tooth responds to pressure. These help determine whether the pulp is inflamed but may recover, or whether it is irreversibly damaged or infected. The dentist will explain what the tests show in plain terms.

Reviewing options

If root canal treatment is recommended, the dentist will discuss the alternative, which is usually extraction followed by replacement options. Saving the natural tooth is often preferred when possible, but the decision depends on how much healthy tooth remains, the outlook for the tooth and your preferences. Some complex cases may be referred to an endodontist.

The procedure

Treatment may take one or more visits.

  1. Cleaning the canals

After numbing the tooth, the dentist places a small sheet called a dental dam to keep the area clean and dry. An opening is made in the top of the tooth, and the infected or inflamed pulp is removed. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected. If infection is significant, medication may be placed inside the tooth between visits.

  2. Sealing and restoring

Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening. Back teeth often need a crown afterward to protect them from fracture, since treated teeth can become more brittle. The dentist will explain the recommended restoration and its timing after treatment is complete.

Recovery

Most people return to normal activities quickly.

The first few days

Some tenderness for a few days is common, especially when biting. Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed, usually helps. Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until it has been fully restored. Contact the office if you notice swelling, increasing pain, a reaction to medication or if a temporary filling comes out early. Keep the area clean.

Protecting the tooth long term

Complete the final restoration as recommended, since a tooth left with only a temporary filling is vulnerable to leakage and fracture. Brush and clean between teeth daily, and attend regular checkups so the dentist can monitor healing on X-rays. Renton patients may want to schedule the crown visit when booking the root canal itself. It saves a call.

Root canal questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does a root canal hurt?

With effective local anaesthetic, most people find the procedure similar to having a filling. Some tenderness afterward is common and usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. Treatment often relieves the pain that the infection was causing.

How long does a root canal take?

It varies with the tooth and complexity. Some are completed in one visit, while others need two or more. Molars with several canals often take longer. The dentist will give you an estimate after examining the tooth.

Will I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth often need a crown because they bear heavy chewing forces and can become brittle after treatment. Front teeth may only need a filling. The dentist will recommend the restoration best suited to protect your tooth.

What is the alternative to a root canal?

The usual alternative is extracting the tooth. If you choose extraction, the dentist can discuss replacement options such as an implant, bridge or partial denture. Keeping the natural tooth is often preferred when it has a good outlook.

Can a root canal fail?

Most root canal treatments succeed, but sometimes infection returns due to missed canals, cracks or leakage. Retreatment or other procedures may then be considered. Completing the final restoration promptly helps reduce the risk of failure.
